Animal Cruelty Increasing During Economic Downturn

I am a member of an animal advocacy group in Anthem, Arizona and unfortunately while animal cruelty is nothing new, the severity and number of stories and cases we are finding have increased significantly during this economic downturn.  We have found pets left behind in foreclosed homes, abandoned in other people's homes, thrown out of moving vehicles, left in public bathrooms and the most recent case thrown onto a busy highway.  Fortunately, for us we have a great community that works to help these animals in need when we send out a request for help.  I wish I could say that I see an end in the near future but I don't.  My solace comes every time I see one of those pets helped and than placed in a loving home.
