Celebrating Real Estate History - Sherwood Oregon

Beautiful Sherwood Oregon

Sherwood is one of the fastest growing and most desirable towns in Oregon.

This city's growth has not squelched the small-town atmosphere of the historic Old Town, and the camaraderie that is evident at community gatherings such as the city's annual Robin Hood Festival.

The Tualatin Indians were the first to live in Sherwood.  It wasn't long after the the first wagon trains arrived in Oregon in 1843 that farmers arrived and settled in Sherwood.

In 1878, the State of Oregon was just 19 years old.  This was at a time when the first Lutheran Church was built in the State of Oregon.  That Church was St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sherwood Oregon.  St. Paul's also served the community as a school, just as it still does today on Cedarview Way just off Roy Rogers Road.  The original church building was 18x24 in size and cost $92.00 to build.  A time when people in town purchased eggs for .6 1/2 cents per dozen, butter was .15 cents a pound, coffee was .15 cents a pound or 2 pounds for .25 cents... And if you saved the coupon, you won a prize.

The work on the Church was done by members of the Schlichting Family whose decendants remain a thriving piece of Sherwood's history today.  The main elders and fore-founders are names embedded in the cities roots.  They are, Schlichting, Mohrmann, Borchers, Matthiesen, Pape, Hellmann and Trapp.

It was just a few years later, in 1885 when J.C Smock granted the railroad the right of way through his property.  In 1889, he and his wife Mary Ellen Sebastion then planned and named the streets surrounding the railroad tracks. The town which emerged was known as Smockville and to some Smock's Station.  Reminiscent of England's beautiful forest, it was later re-named "Sherwood".  In 1911, Sherwood's city limits were one square mile, and the population was 350 residents.

The Robin Hood Legend belongs to the downtrodden. The businessmen of Sherwood Oregon U.S.A. were feeling downtrodden in the years immediately following World War II. The town's economy was drying up. The main road didn't go through town. There was a three way crossing on Highway 99 called Six Corners.  It was starting to draw business away from the historic core. But the romantic little town of Sherwood refused to give up. Inspired by the recent re-release of the 1938 Robin Hood classic, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Sherwood's town-fathers took the Legend and made it the most successful public relations venture in the town's history.  The Robin Hood icon is free and it excites people around the world. Still today, Sherwood's Robin Hood Festival is an annual celebration that brings people in from all over.

Today, Sherwood stretches 5 square miles and is home to over 16,000 residents.  Sherwood is a medley of juxtapositions - the old and the new creating a unique harmony. The protected wetlands of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge and the rolling hills of fertile farmland surround Sherwood's bustling roads and city center. The quiet of Old Town's antique stores and tea shops are only minutes away from new commercial businesses such as the ACT III 10-screen theater, popular local restaurants, the YMCA and the Ice Hus, a double-sheet ice rink.

This vitality of oppositions makes Sherwood one of Oregon's most livable cities, providing attractions for all. It is a family-oriented community not far from the down-town city life of Portland Oregon.  The community takes great pride in what the area has to offer, including housing, excellent schools and athletic programs.

The city is located on Highway 99W, between Tigard and Newberg, an important transportation triangle in south Washington County.  Sherwood is also nestled in the Willamette Valley's award-wining wine country.  Many agree the proximity is perfect.  A short 5 minute drive will get you to Newberg's old-fashioned "Drive-In" movie theater, 10 minutes to George Fox University, less than 20 minutes and you're in the City of Portland, 25 minutes to the Portland International Airport and in just over an hour... You can enjoy the beautiful Oregon Coast or snow skiing on Mt. Hood.

The location also makes it ideal for professionals who commute to work in Portland and return to live in the quiet of the Sherwood community.  You'll simply discover Sherwood is a place where you'll love living!

Hi Liz - Thanks for reading my blog and learning more about Sherwood Oregon.  It's a beautiful place - one of the many reasons we decided to move and raise our family here about a decade ago.
