In Social Media Does Size really matter?

As I continue to see more and more people diving into social media marketing there seems to be a common belief among many that the size of your social network dictates the success and expertise of the social media marketer.

I have assembled my top 3 favorite myths in social media marketing because the more you truly understand what does count towards success and expertise in social media marketing the greater the results you will experience.

The following myths may come as a surprise but it's about time that someone tells you the truth. So here it is:

Myth #1

The number of people following you on Twitter shows how successful and how much of an expert you are in Social Media Marketing.

Myth# 2

The greater the number of friends you have in social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn and My Space really determine how successful and how knowledgeable you are in Social Media Marketing.

Myth# 3

The more social networking sites you belong to the better the results, connections, and expertise you have in social media marketing.

I know you're probably thinking that there's a catch to what I'm saying right?

Wrong!

How could size not matter?

Well, let's tackle the first myth.

The number of people following you on Twitter shows how successful and how much of an expert you are in Social Media Marketing.

Excuse me for saying this but this is a bunch of crap! You see there are countless amounts of people on social media platforms like Twitter that do nothing but start to follow as many people as possible and the ones who follow them back within 24 hours they keep in their following list and the ones who don't follow back they simply 'remove' the following and search for more.

That's what they spend their time doing simply building a useless following based on the 'I follow you so you follow me' strategy. No relationships, no conversations, no value, no target marketing, just useless numbers that mean nothing.

There are few leaders in the Twitter platform that have built very large and valuable followings while creating a synergistic community. These are the types of leaders you should learn from and study.

My advice to you is to not get hung up on numbers instead get hung up on creating value, conversations, relationships and a true targeted following of people who you can network with and build fortunes with.

Now let's talk about Myth #2

The greater the number of friends you have in social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn and My Space really determine how successful and how knowledgeable you are in Social Media Marketing.

Don't buy this garbage for a minute! Would you rather have a 100 friends who are truly a powerful network of close friends who you bring value to and they bring value to you on a daily basis or would you rather have 1000 friends with no value, no conversations, no networking and even no common business interest?

Many so called social networkers try building a social network but with no real value or no real relationships. They simply get so caught up in the size of their network that they lose sight of what building a social network is really all about. It's all about relationships!

My advice to you is seek to befriend 4-5 people per day and once you have a new friend then go the extra step and send them a personal email or write on their wall. Adding a new friend to your network is the connection but now you need to make an introduction and eventually move it to a conversation. Conversations build relationships and relationships build trust. The more people get to know you, like you, and trust you, the more they will want to do business with you!

Finally let's talk about Myth #3

The more social networking sites you belong to the better the results, connections, and expertise you have in social media marketing.

Again I have to say it, this is a bunch of crap! To truly build a valuable social network you will need to target between 3-4 social sites for your social media marketing plan. Why only a maximum of 4?

Because there is no way you can handle more than 4 unless you have 24 hours a day and nothing better to do!

Let me say this again!

It's not the size of your social network that matters it's the quality of the relationships that you have that matter.

My advice to you is to read my note or blog post' The Power of One' and understand the social media marketing mindset.

There are 3,000 social sites on the Internet and growing but the best news for you is your personal success, personal fortune, and personal social network of amazing people can all be found in less that 3-4 targeted social sites.

What a relief right?

I encourage you to share this note with your network and start building value in your network. We are in this together and I look forward to getting to know you better as we continue this amazing journey of success together!

Make it a great day!

Marco - I can appreciate what you're saying here, but having a lot of followers or friends could also result in more potential contacts.  While you're correct that it doesn't necessarily mean anything, it could mean that someone has a large AND captive audience of interested contacts.

If that following was targeted and there has been connections, conversations, and value than yes it does matter. If there was no relationship building at all building that foundation of followers than you simply have a list of people that you solicit to but with little to no results. Potential contacts are great but the only way you will ever benefit from a contact is through conversation and value.

Thank you for the feedback! :)

Marco: you could spend all your time on these social networks. Still not sure if they are worth it.

One guy talks about pizza dough on his and the price in the local market. He is an agent in our market. Guess he' s not  buys. I don;t care about the price of focaccia in his neighborhood.

Has me wondering.....

Nice post, but I must strongly disagree, if done correctly, with your opinion in social networking.  I am having massive success in a mere six months of Facebook.  I took my database and have been starting to build my social network from my farm as well as my friends.  I have two listing this past week that were direct referrals from communication on Facebook.  Would this have happened anyhow?  Questionable.  I am getting contacted more and more by my sphere and am building my sphere around my farm.  My agents are doing the same and we are developing a web around our farm straight from Facebook.  With a plan, social networking is a fabulous means of contacting one's sphere and building from it.

Facebook is an awesome platform, I think it stands above the rest and it has a lot of benefits for business networking.

Tim you are proving my point exactly! Good for you because you are working your target market and you are building your social network from your friends as well. My post is targeted to the unhealthy strategies that are listed above. Social Media Marketing is by far the best way to market your business when done correctly. I love Facebook and Twitter and use them constantly but there are many newcomers to social networking that are taking on bad habits and my goal is to help them build their social network correctly. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for making all these points. I think some people get so wrapped up in the the volume and forget to get out and connect with real buyers and sellers.
