Hot Pot Taiwan Style

I was excited when I found out we where going out for a Hot Pot Dinner tonight. As it turned out it was delicious but it was not what I expected.

At home a hot pot is a cast iron pot brought to the table steaming hot with succulent vegetables, meats, seafood and vegetables bubbling in a black bean or other sauce. The steam fills the air with the sweet odour of garlic and Chinese seasonings.

This hot pot was a pot embedded in the table filled with a clear broth and heat controls in the hands of the dinner.  Into the boiling pot I placed lettuce, LoBok, mushroom, tofu, seafood, seaweed, squash, a few unidentifiable items and thinly sliced pork. This I eat with a bowl of steamed rice.

Dinner for four cost less than $25.00 which included tea and a tiny pudding for dessert.

This was a bit more expensive than the average erstaurant meal in this neighbourhood. I could eat all my meals at a restaurant here and spend a maximum of $10.00 per day and if I was frugle could get by spending $5.00.

Meals are so reasonable that many families have most meals as the numerous eating places in the local markets and lanes.
