Is It A Keeper?

By
Home Inspector with Square One Home Inspection

This weekend I had the pleasure of doing some open water fishing and ice fishing in the same weekend. That does not happen very often in February around here.

On Saturday, I managed to land absolutely no fish. My fishing partners hauled in several small catfish though, so we considered the day to be a success. As I said, open water fishing is not a normal activity at this time of year, so we took full advantage and had a great time.

Sunday, we resumed ice fishing on a different lake in our area. This is the standard form of fishing for this time of year in my area. Our group hit the lake fairly early for a Sunday morning. We were fishing by about 8:30. We drilled several holes and generally hung out and chatted the morning away.

My brother-in-law managed to catch his first "ice" fish on this trip to the lake. It wasn't a monster, in fact it wasn't even a keeper. But it was his first, and I hope he had a blast.

All in all, we had a fairly successful day. We called it quits just after dark and packed everything up. We ended up catching four Northern Pike on Sunday, but no keepers, as they have to be 32" long on our lake. We managed one that was very close, but still not long enough.

I hope everyone had as great of a weekend as I did. I was glad it warmed up around here, and we were able to spend some outdoor time with family and friends this past weekend. hang in there everyone, Spring is coming.

It's beautiful here as well. Took a walk down to the waterfalls today, didn't take my camera or my fishing rod. Spring is definitly around the bend....somewhere.

My idea of fishing is trolling off the back of a 35 - 40 ft. boat 10 to 15 miles off shore in the Gulf Stream.  Once I did that (sun and beer included) I was spoiled.  Glad you had a good time, don't fall in.

Good thing you weren't with the lake Erie group stranded on a ice sheet

Ian,

Sounds like I need to let you borrow my certified fish stretcher for your next trip. I haven't been fishing in a few weeks (not so good wind conditions for a 21' boat in the ocean).  Check out vbsf.net for some reports from Hampton Roads!

PS I want to see some pike pic's!

Claude-I heard about that group and am glad I have never been caught in something like that.

David-All my pics from last year were moved to disc. I'll have to locate them or have my wife find the fish disc. I haven't caught a legal one through the ice yet this year. I might not with this warm spell were in now.

I haven't been in the rain much this pst wek. I was pretty busy, and didn't have alot of time.

I just wanted to touch up on the fishing here. Sadly, last weekend, the warm weather wreaked havoc on the ice here. A man and his young daughter died in an accident when there vehicle fell into a crack on the ice.

In another case a vehicle fell through the ice, and no one was injured. the occupants were not in the vehicle at that time, thank goodness. the water depth was over 100 ft, so this group was very fortunate.

At this time of year we need to be extra careful on the ice.
