This weekend I had the pleasure of doing some open water fishing and ice fishing in the same weekend. That does not happen very often in February around here.
On Saturday, I managed to land absolutely no fish. My fishing partners hauled in several small catfish though, so we considered the day to be a success. As I said, open water fishing is not a normal activity at this time of year, so we took full advantage and had a great time.
Sunday, we resumed ice fishing on a different lake in our area. This is the standard form of fishing for this time of year in my area. Our group hit the lake fairly early for a Sunday morning. We were fishing by about 8:30. We drilled several holes and generally hung out and chatted the morning away.
My brother-in-law managed to catch his first "ice" fish on this trip to the lake. It wasn't a monster, in fact it wasn't even a keeper. But it was his first, and I hope he had a blast.
All in all, we had a fairly successful day. We called it quits just after dark and packed everything up. We ended up catching four Northern Pike on Sunday, but no keepers, as they have to be 32" long on our lake. We managed one that was very close, but still not long enough.
I hope everyone had as great of a weekend as I did. I was glad it warmed up around here, and we were able to spend some outdoor time with family and friends this past weekend. hang in there everyone, Spring is coming.
