The Congress for the New Urbanism recently honored Royal Oak as one of the 10 best communities at controlling urban sprawl, revitalizing and creating workable, eco-friendly Main Streets. The list:

1. Montgomery County, Maryland (Washington, D.C.)
2. Tempe, Arizona (Phoenix)
3. Suisun City, California (Bay Area)
4. Shaker Heights, Ohio (Cleveland)
5. Royal Oak, Michigan (Detroit)
6. Hammond/Whiting/Gary, Indiana (Chicago)
