Racial Experience of Comments Made

Being in a multi racial marriage for eleven years, and having two wonderful boys, it is my priority to ensure that my kids are raised to respect everyone, no matter what their race, and make sure they are in a comfortable environment as well, and safe and secure. I have often had other people tell me, it is not like it used to be, most people are past racism and it is not as bad as it once was. Of course, I would hope with a new president that is from a background of African American decent, and being in the 20th century that this is the case. I know that there are still ignorant people out there though, and I am not oblivious to it. However, it is always a wake up call when you have an experience first hand, no matter how small it may seem.

You see, I am seeking to relocate to another city and state  down south (a top 5 city for size)  and I was speaking with an employer looking to hire in my field. When he asked me where I was looking to live, he said, "You will want to live in Suburb X not Suburb Y due to being on the border of this Suburb Z. Alot of the "blacks" live in Suburb Z which borders Suburb Y, and there are alot more car jackings."

I was very taken back by this comment and really didn't even know how to react. I have spoken with many other people from this area who are obviously not like this, but it still blows my mind a bit! From what I hear there are a lot more minorities in the bordering suburb, but they are very affluent. There are certain parts of the city further south that are rougher, in which I am sure black people reside. However, statistically higher crime goes hand in hand with lower income areas, not directly with race, even if there are more of one race than another in those areas.

Just thought I would share that information and get your thoughts.

They are all over the place.  My husband has friends like that and they are not welcome in my home.
