This must be localism

These photos were taken locally, by a local resident, me. They are in black and white because we are in a depression and I can't afford color any more. These pictures may be offensive to those who live in the burbs or those who live in warmer climates.

They saved Mickey's dinner, sometimes the little guy does win. The 1940's art deco street car stood in the way of progress but the City of St. Paul in their infinite wisdom made the insurance company stop building so Mickey's could stay.

The man sits on the bench on West 7th plaza in downtown St. Paul, eating a bagel.  The white speckles on the bench are pigeon poop. It is on the bench because there are a lot of pigeons on the plaza eating bagel crumbs.

W.A. Frosts on the corner of Selby and Dale. You just can't get any more St. Paul than this. They have a lovely patio but I didn't bother taking a photo because it is winter and no one is using it.

One of the lovely homes in St. Paul in the cathedral hill neighborhood. The roundish thingy to the left is the cathedral. This photo screams St. Paul so you might want to cover your ears.

Hardware on a brick building downtown.  When I stopped to take this shot the people I was with thought I was kind of nutty.  They have probably thought that for a long time now but the truth is I will stop to take a photo of a random water valve from time to time.

I love where I live even though there is pigeon poop and it is cold out and I can't afford color any more.

Your photos are simply awesome! It's some great local "color" in black & white. Keep up the good work.

I think the man on the bench is a fabulous photo.  Looks like you used HDR with it?

I live in Georgia where it was 72 degrees today and simply beautiful. Us "folk" down here in the south always say "Why would anyone live up there?" I should probably send your photos to some of them so they could see the tranquility in them. Breathtaking!

Hi Teresa...The black and white photos are very dramatic and your comments, fun.

The last time I took black & white film to be developed it was more expensive than color.  Unfortunately my photos did not like yours so were hardly worth the cost.

I like one of the man eating the bagel.

Hi Teresa, Amazing how effective photos can be in black and white and the message conveyed. Well done and I especially like the clarity of the pigeon poop picture ( bench) that would not be so clear ( or depressing, lol) in color. Good job!

Pigeon poop isn't really very colorful. I guess is does look best in black and white.

Funny thing about color.  When the Daffodils and Tulips blossom, we'll see color all around us, even if the mood is in gray tones.

Teresa, your black and white photos are spectacular. Since Ansel Adams's passing, black and white photography is becoming a lost art. Thanks.

T--I avoid that pigeon-pooped bench...isn't it around the corner from the Candyland popcorn place? I still have my ears covered as the screaming "St Paul" is still coming from the beautiful cathedral photo! Lovely B&W photo essay of St. Paul!

What Melina said ....  These look like you using HDR on black and white photos?

The effect is amazing!  Beautiful stuff, T.  :-)

Cheryl - I have been doing some experimenting with black and white HDR. I like the effect. It doesn't work with every photo but HDR photos tend to have more contrast in them so it works well with most. I have always liked black and white photography so I am having a lot of fun with it. I don't think it worked as well on the first and third photo as it does on the other three.

Teri - yes around the corner from candyland on 7th.

Hi Teresa, these pictures speak volumes. You are really talented. My favorite is the second one with the man eating the bagle and the murals behind him. I wouldn't have noticed the bird poop but the dirty snow adds a frozen and tangible bleakness.

Your photographs are so spectacular! There is a real sensitivity to them. They are not just photos they are a glimse into an emotion --- more than a house or neighborhood. The lighting is compelling, the composition excellent --- very, very nice. Thanks for sharing them.
