Time management strategies in cyber-space - please show me HOW!!!

Education & Training with Possibility.ca

I've learned so much about social media since joining Active Rain. It's opened up a whole new world.  A/R members (and staff) are so generous...sharing tips, tools and short cuts that save non-techies like me months of precious time and mind-bending frustration.  I've connected with so many kindred spirits. It's really quite astonishing!

Having said that...I feel compelled to ask...

Am I the only one who can whittle away an entire day trying to figure out how to use all the applications that are available to me?

Tana's blog

Reading, commenting, chatting, video conferencing, blogging, Twitter, Facebook, Active Rain, outside blogging, Skype, Linked In, website updates, etc...etc...

Obviously, many of you have devised time management systems and strategies that enable you to maintain productivity in your "physical reality"...haven't you?

How do you prevent social networking from cutting into relationships with children, spouces, parents, friends and family...I'm talking about the balancing act...is there a balanced way to multi-task in cyber space?

What do you do to HAVE IT ALL?  Do tell!  What works?  What doesn't work?

I have no interest in becoming a talking head - spreading one-way wisdom - neither reading or commenting on other people's blogs. What attracts me to this medium is the opportunity to connect with like minded people and a passion for writing...the Law of Attraction...in terms of ancient wisdom, specialized knowledge, social causes, business transactions of mutual benefit and human interest stories.

As they say in the funnies "Holy over-loaded circuitry Batman!"

Hi Tana,

I am so with you on this!  This stuff can really be addictive!  I think one thing that might help is not to have them open all of the time and to set aside certain times to check up on your accounts, blog, etc.  Set a timer and when time is up, turn it off.

Another thing you might try is just to keep a simple log of what you do online and how much of it is work-related.  Sometimes all we need is a reality check.

Let me know how it goes!

I set time limits.  Since I'm a morning person, I typically get up early in the morning write my blogs; and check my social media pages; then I'm done with it for the day.  I consider it my "early-morning marketing".

Erika, I have often thought of buying an egg timer as a tool to tackle mundane tasks. I think you've tipped me over this time. I'm adding it to my shopping list.

Kathy, I'm a morning person too. I do my best thinking in the morning. I may try blogging in the afternoon - treating it like an enjoyable, extended coffee break.

Thanks for the pointers.

I'm just getting started on Active Rain and done a little on my blog, but I try to get some time in the morning before I go into the office or after work at home. I really can't find the time while I'm at the office. Of course I'm not even doing everything that most people are. I'll have to build up slow and steady. I really don't want to get too carried away - I need balance.

I need a timer, I think it is a great idea. That way you'll stay focused on your 20% that matters.

Wow!  How things have changed here on Active Rain. I've been away for a few days - when I come back I don't even recognize things. I love to see the photos of Kathy and Erica. How'd you do that? That begs the question, why is there no photo of Alex, Lee & Carol?  I love the timer and "stay focused" suggestions, everyone. Thanks again.  - Tana
