Change I can Believe in...

At 11:00pm last night, the Congressional Conference Committee released the final draft of the Federal Stimulus Bill.  At 9:00am today, the House of Representatives began discussion on the bill.  The vote was early this afternoon.

Previously, the Democrat Leadership PROMISED 48 hours for the bill to be reviewed between release from the Conference Committee and final voting.  The 48 hours won't be up until 11:00pm Saturday Night.  By that time, we the Taxpayers will have already sent Nancy Pelosi to Italy to meet the Pope.  In fact, as I write this... 18 hours after the release, Nancy Pelosi is getting ready to fly in a government flight (have we noticed that when executives need to travel they need to travel commercially... but not Congress).

That means that the Democrat's Leadership missed their 48 hours by at least 33 hours!

The Senate will be voting either tonight or tomorrow on the bill... also under the 48 hour moratorium.  The vote will at least be closer there...

During the Presidential Campaign, PrezBO PROMISED that when given major legislation for signing, he would have a "5 Day Sunshine Period" between the bill being sent to the White House and signing.  The soonest that the bill could possibly sent to the President's Desk is tonight... Friday.  Obama plans on signing this bill on Monday.  If the bill doesn't pass until Saturday evening, it is very possible that the "5 Day Sunshine Period" might actually last less than 48 hours.

That means that the President will miss his 5 day period by at least 3 days!

For 2 years we have been hammered by the message of "Change".  Obama has talked over and over about transparency and disclosure.  He has made beautiful speeches and delivered populist sound bites.  The speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader have backed up the President and promised the American people that the government wasn't going to operate behind closed doors and out of the light...

And just to add the little icing flowers to the big beautiful cake...  when the stimulus bill was presented, it was done in an unsearchable format.  A reader couldn't search the bill for key phrases...  It is well over 1000 pages.  Nancy Pelosi herself stated at the release that the language was often confusing and that Members of Congress needed to take their time to understand the language.

Is a week going to destroy the country?

I know that the arguement from Democrats will be that this needs to be done with great haste speed.  Time is of the essence.  But, is this not major legislation?  Is this not EXACTLY what Obama was talking about when he promised to hold bills for 5 days so that the American People could know what he was signing?

Remember, the Congressional Budget Office has stated that between 20-25% of the bill could be considered stimulus.  That means that 75-80% of the bill won't do much to stimulate the economy.  That means that almost $600,000,000,000 of this money is being spent, not to stimulate the economy, but to put pet projects and long-term spending tracks in place. (and don't forget that they have also told Congress that the stimulus package would actually hinder GDP growth and employment in the medium and long range)

I have heard that among the most popular terms one finds when reading the bill is "operation and maintenance."  Operation and maintenance ISN'T stimulus.  It is regular spending.  It should be in a regular spending bill.

And finally...  We have already been told that this isn't the last of it.  There is a new round of TARP spending coming... in addition to the second round of spending from the first batch of money.  There is talk of an increased federal budget to support the new programs introduced in this "emergency bill."

We are being lied to by our politicians, and that last thing we can call that is "Change We Can Believe In."

Mike - You would think wit hall of the talk of transparency from the new White House and the Congressional Leadership that one of the first things they would do is convert to FREE software that would allow searching documents... or maybe by transparent they really mean partially translucent.  They'll let us see what they want us to see.

Kevin - I think the country can come back, but I think there will be some 'splainin' to do...

Lane,

Great Post and Thank you for being so clear and coherent. I find myself so angry and amazed at how so many will defend Obama that my posts are filled with anger instead of clear thought. I to would like to re-blog this post on my personal blog at http://www.alicesalesdfw.com/

As a practicing Catholic it infuriates me that Pelosi uses her supposed faith to sway people. She is a total hypocrite and idiot.  In my opinion she needs a major conversion experience if she wants to escape the gates of Hell.

I saw this article from AP "How will the government stimulus affect you"

At least this gives us something to review.

Still think that the legislators should have had enough time to read the 1071 pages bill, then presented it to their constituents to at least give the semblance that they kinow and understand what they're voting on.

Can't imagine writing an offer that is 1071 pages long, and expect the other party to totally comprehend and accept the offer given the time for review.

Imagine submitting at 11 pm when most folks are probably in bed, and vote by 9 am the next day? Incomprehensible! Change that to reprehensible if they voted without reading.

Alice - You are welcome to re-post and point back to this blog.

Pacita - The leadership doesn't want representatives, the media or the public at large to know what is in the bill until it is law.

Alice - Thanks.

Lane,

There is a point in history that historians and scholars can look to and say, "that was the end of the Ming Dynasty". Many others might point towards a certain era that marked the end of the Roman Empire, The British Empire, the U.S.S.R. The funny thing is that when looked at in hindsight, the end is usually much earlier than any specific event marking it.

For instance, the end of the U.S.S.R. was not when Reagan told Gorbachev to "...tear down this wall." It was when the Soviet Union first pulled it's troops out of Afghanistan. Really! that was the true turning point in Russia's history and what happened between that moment and the moment the first stones fell was just a scuffling of feet.

In the crumbling moments of an empire many things happen. What is a sure sign though is that those in power know what is going on before the people do. Their knowledge allows them to rape and pillage the state in silence before the masses are able to act. It is a privilege of power. It is also why the same families in history have remained powerful through the many empires and rulers  (think Rothschilds). This isn't a blog however about oligarchy and conspiracy.

My point is that what we are seeing now, I believe is the fleecing of America, because the rulers already know what we here complain is the end of our nation as we know it. For instance, TARP was never meant to be money given to banks to lend to consumers. It was meant to be money given to strong banks to buy weaker ones. This is just out today by the CEO of US Bancorp. It is Darwinism on crack.

We are witnessing the crumbling of our system and we talk about still trying to change it. Unfortunately, I believe the wheels are well in motion and have been for some time. I believe that the end of America, as we know it may have started as far back as the first Bush, but for sure with the second. History may mark the end as 9/11. I am not sure how it will all pan out. We are too close to the trees to see the forest.

The end is already here and gone. We are moving through it to some new place. We are looking back and yearning for freedom and responsibility while our leaders push us towards ignorance and bliss. Bliss, mind you, can only be achieved through ignorance of some sort. That is a bold statement but one that requires thought.

So, rather than lament what we have lost. lets figure out where we are going and how we can mold it.

As a conservative libertarian, I value freedom above all else. I value it more than the stablity that Democrats want or order that Republicans want. I value freedom. That is where the ball is. try to keep your eye on that. It isn't easy because the two ruling parties want you to keep your eyes on silly meaningless issues while they hide the ball. It is all about the ball.

History will  judge us on how hard we hung onto the ball. That is it. In 50 years will we be a free people or slaves. Who cares if our roads have cracks or not, will we be free? Go to Russia and you will see many more cracks in their roads than we have and they are still not free. I am serious. Our buildings will get old and our streets will crack. That is O.K., President Obama. Let me keep my freedom. Steal my money, but not my freedom.

A raodmap of how things may shake out can be found in the French Revolution. Change and Hope were the mantras of those people and what they got was a more incompetent and greedy ruler than what they ousted. Be careful what you wish for and keep your eye on the ball.

Tony - It needs to be done from time to time...

CF - I needed to sit and think a bit on your comment.

I think the place to start is that I think the US started its sunset with FDR and the New Deal.  Even before that, the Democratization of the Senate might have been more important.  Most people have NO idea that the country functioned with Senators being selected by the state governments up until 1913.  Also, there was no income tax before 1913.  But in the case of the Senate, they kept the federal government in check, as they were elected to watch for the interests of the states... as the House looked out for the interests of the people.

I think it would have been tough for the federal government to sieze the power over the last 80 years if the Senate were keeping a watchful eye on the 10th Amendment.  Reserving power to the states would have helped with that.

The "Great Society" initiatives of the late 1960s also eroded the US from a fredom perspective.

But, even given all of that, I think that we still have a chance.  I think that if we can educate our children about actual freedom v. little choices that mean nothing, we can survive.  People come to this country every day looking to be free.  Others come looking to be taken care of... we need to keep the freedom seekers and reject those looking to coast.

We also need to take control of the debate in a new way.  Instead of letting the socialists control discussion, we need to push the points of libertarianism...  Such as the morality of freedom v. the immorality of taking from those who earn to give to those that don't.

wow, so many people with so little faith.  Don't you get it, we are voice.  Are you all going to lay down and die?  Our Country  hasn't died.  Our believes have been challenged, our faith is being tested, but are remarkable times.

I don't agree with what is happening,  I didn't agree with what went down with the last administration.

Fight back, quit complaining about how we have been lied to and demand the truth!!  Start a Fire Congress movement in your City.  Support and independent candidate and let's get a third party into Congress so break up the stranglehold that the two party system has on our country

Define yourself as something other than Republican or Democrat.  This country was built on the resilience of it's people.  People who were willing to hold a Bonton Tea Party.

Let's Hold One!

It is funny I just got back from my Bible study on Esther. Which by the way I had never really read. Man is it juicy. Anyway while reading it I am seeing so many parallels to our culture, economy and times as was written in the old testament book of Esther. Amazing.

While in our small group over the last several weeks I keep saying to myself hey girls don't you get it. Instead of saying we don't talk politics in here because we don't want to offend, I want to scream it is all politics. It is right here in the bible for crying out loud. You do not see the big picture and what is happening right in front of you and you do not even care. So yes, Lane I think you are right it takes guts to speak out some will and some won't but just as Mordecai said to Esther.

"Even if you remain silent, relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another source; but you and your father's house will perish. Who knows but that it was for a time like this that you obtained the royal dignity"?

What I learned this morning is that on the heels of crisis is where our destiny is born.

Crisis is what causes the many that don't have courage to speak out to change their mind and not remain silent!

I do not know if this crisis is deciding my destiny but I sure as heck will not remain silent.

Just my perspective after a morning with Esther!!!

Alice - I don't know that the bible is the right source to use for refuting the actions of the current regime... the Constitution is tough enough to knock them down if people would read it.

Lane,

I think you are correct. That was just where I was at that particular morning. It was just amazing to me that history keeps repeating itself over and over.

The great thing about the Constitution is that when read and used strictly, people of all faiths, and beliefs can survive. It is when the Constitution is seen as a living document and starts getting interpreted to favor one ideology over another that we get in trouble. The Constitution stands for all Americans.

IF YOU DO NOT STAND FOR SOMETHING YOU WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING!

Thank you Lane for pointing that out!!!

Alice - It IS odd though, that the same people that want it to be a "living document" don't think that Freedom of the Press should apply to radio, TV or the internet... because they weren't specified by the Framers.
