Common Homeowners Insurance Claims and How to Prevent Them

Homeowners purchase home insurance in case their home or property is damaged, but no homeowner ever wants to HAVE to use it. Most people try their best to avoid claims. However, that's the point of insurance - accidents and bad situations do happen, and you want to be ready when they do.

Here are a few of the most common insurance claims, and how you can prevent them.

Pipes that leak or freeze in your home can cause devastating damage, often in a short amount of time. And most of the time, no one notices until there is already a good bit of damage done. Pipes that freeze can burst and flood an entire floor.

How do you prevent these accidents?

Make sure you're checking the pipes regularly, and have them repaired immediately if you see anything wrong. As for the freezing pipes, if you're going to be away for awhile (like for the holidays), be sure to set your thermostat above freezing and have someone check in on your home at least twice a week.

Most fires that happen in the typical home are electrical fires, due to bad wiring or a short circuit. Again, regular inspections can prevent major disasters. Check cables, wires, and cords every three months. Look for loose sockets, wires that have been stripped or are coming apart from the plug head, and anything else that seems wrong. Wires and cords should never be "run" under a carpet or rug where there's heavy traffic - this will cause them to fray.

Burglary is always a threat. Make sure that your home is protected as much as it can be against thieves. You'll need locks on all windows and doors, as well as an alarm system.

There are countless types of security systems - from sensory alarms to automated lights which will make it appear as though you're home. Check in to see which security system best fits your home and needs.

Most claims can be avoided through precaution and inspections. These are just a few ways to keep your home and family safe. For more information on home insurance and safety, contact us today! We're the Kramer Insurance Center, based in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
