Zero VOC Paints ... What's That Stand For? ... Very Odd Colors? ... Home Stagers, Interior Designers & Brokers Can Spread the Word on Eco Friendly Paint.

Mythic Zero VOC Paint   Mythic Zero VOC Paint   Mythic Zero VOC Paint   Mythic Zero VOC Paint   Mythic Zero VOC Paint

Being in the Interior Design and Home Staging world, I know a lot about paint. I suppose that I began to take it for granted that everyone knows what low VOC and Zero VOC paints are. Silly me!

Today I'm going out on a paint color consultation. When speaking with my client on the phone I asked her if she had a preference for low or zero VOC paints. She had no idea what that meant. --- No, she didn't ask me if it stood for "very odd colors" ... that was just for my fun title --- Well, I could certainly understand her lack of knowledge. She doesn't do this for a living and may not be an obsessive watcher of HGTV nor spend endless hours perusing designer magazines extolling the virtues of eco friendly products. But imagine my surprise when recently I contacted a paint contractor who shook his head in puzzlement when I told him the brand and color my client had chosen and instructed him to have it mixed in that vendor's zero VOC paint. Well, if a paint contractor is clueless about these eco friendly choices, we have quite a job ahead of us in continuing to educate people about the options that will be better for our planet and better for our health.

Did you know that indoor air is 3 times more polluted than outdoor air, and that according to the EPA, it is considered to be one of the top 5 hazards to human health? Yikes!! Paints and finishes are among the leading causes of this pollution. So, whether your client will be living with their choices, painting prior to selling, or you are a broker explaining to a buyer what the advantage is of a house painted in non-toxic paints,  ... we have a great opportunity to get the word out.

I won't bore you here with all the details of what constitutes "low" vs. zero VOC, but for those of you who would like more info, here's a great informative link with explanations of the types of paint and links to lots of brands.

Pangaea , I notice a huge difference in the ( lack of ) smell in my Green Homes with the no VOC paint ! It is even more important as we tighten the building envelopes ! Keepin' it Green !

Ed- Thanks for your input. It just isn't that much more money to go low or no VOC ... maybe $5 to $10 per gallon.  One of those no brainers I think.

Am so happy to read your blog.  As faux finishers we have always tried to limit our chemical exposure. For people who are really senstiive or have a grave concern, they also need to be aware that even if the paint base is zero voc, the tinting forumla may not be.  Darker or more vibrant colors are generally more toxic.  Loved that there was a mention of bird safe paints!

Michelle - people who are particularly sensitive could really use the information on the eartheasy.com site. Glad you found it informative.

Good tips and we thank you for spreading the word.  Like staging we think about it so much we think everyone knows what we are talking about, so spreading the word is never done, just a new set of people to educate.

Pangaea,  Very creative...  I like the 'Very odd colors' title.   I was preveiwing property last week and this one, new and otherwise, nice starter home wreaked of VOCs.  Now, I'm not overly sensitive, but I couldn't wait to get out of there and in fact, I had a headache for the rest of the day.  While there were probably issues with the paint, the carpet or the pad was truly overpowering.  Imagine a new baby learning how to crawl.  WOW, it blows my mind to realize how far we have to go with this and so many other issues.  I'm going to reblog your post, following janeAnne's lead.  Thanks

How funny Pangea - Very Odd Colors!  We are blessed to have many local paint manufacturers right in our own backyard who carry No or Low VOC paint lines now.   I have a painter who specializes in environmental paint products and treatments who I will be sure to pass your way for your clients also.

VOC - Volitile Organic Compounds, Very Odd Colors, Very Optimistic Clientele, Vivid Or Colorless, Variety over Cluless.....

Hi Pangaea,

I promote this paint of my site and encourage it's use. Unlike other people here who have used Low VOC paint, I still cannot remain in a home painted with it. Asthma can't take it so it seems it still isn't the solution for everyone. My husband on the other hand loved using it and said there was hardly any odour at all. So on thant point it is good for Staging and not having a new paint smell in the house.
