The Mac User Solution for Accessing the MLS and Standard Forms

By
Industry Observer with Retired

Finally a viable solution for California Mac Users ( and now hopefully all other states ) to access the MLS and without needing Windows or Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Citrix offers a solution. The state of California has been offering the Citrix solution to access Winforms. Other states that use the Zipforms Standard Forms also now have access to their standard forms without switching from the Mac Os X operating system.

Announced this past week, Sandicor, the San Diego County Regional MLS announced that it has coupled with Citrix to provide MLS access using Safari or Mozilla's Firefox.

Many REALTORS nationwide like me in the past have hesitated to switch over from a PC to the Macintosh operating system understanding that they would still have to install windows on the dual core processor to access the MLS.

I made the switch to the MAC over the recent holidays and found the needed software Parallels that allowed windows to operate on the MAC to be somewhat unreliable when it comes to using the installed printers and also uploading photos from iPhoto. It works but when you need something quickly , juggling things like USB cables is not the best way to have to go. Besides the only reason I installed Windows at all was because I needed access to the MLS which before now only worked with Internet Explorer.

I am delighted to now have access to my MLS on the Mac OS X and being able to search and perform the normal tasks of a REALTORS so much faster and with ease.

If you use a MAC , the solution is now available and I would recommend you contact your local MLS and get them to get set up with Citrix if there is something needed for them to install in their respective MLS Data Base systems. It is a fast and easy download and it would be my pleasure to provide the link here for those on the Mac that would like to see just how easy this is.

My prediction is that many many REALTORS will now feel free to go ahead and make the switch since the two most important aspects of our business, Our Standard Forms and our MLS's are now available through Safari and or Firefox.

That's what we do here...otherwise many could not use the mls...now...what about the consumer? Are they able to see the listings you send if using a mac?

William - well it's about time. Drives me nuts having to use IE for our MLS - or do you have to be a Mac user? I am NOT switching to a Mac. LOL

Out of order but Hi Jeff, If you check out that site, I think Citrix also works with a PC that allows for you yo use Firefox. I am nt positive but look on the site, I see a download for PC's as well.

Sharon, Check out Citrx, I think it also works for PCS to use Firefox. As I mentioned to Jeff, it seems that it might work.

Gary, I suppose I should have investigated this more but I think it might also solve an issue for you. Check it out and see if that is the case. Safari works with it as well.

Sally, Yes they are. I have been using this ( Citrix ) a few days now and my clients get everything just fine and have no issues at all. The forms are of course sent in PDF format. So no issues as of yet.

I meant to send you, Gary and Shadow a Valentines greeting but I just didn't get the Internet up till very late last night and it was down most of the day.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO,

Here is wishing you all a beautiful Valentines Day and hope that it was special. Happy Valentines Day from your good friend across the ocean.

Hugs

Always,

William

I  got started on the Mac on New Year's Eve too. I added Fusion and the only thing I use it for is MLS. We use Mlxchange, I have been asking for years for them to upgrade us to use FF.

zipforms required an update and it is not not working right on the Mac side. Have you or do you use Quick Books? I am still using it on my Pc as I heard it was unstable on the Mac, but I would really like to use it there.

I will email this to them William and hope for the best.

Now off to learn more.

Hi Missy,

We certainly do think on the same page. I used to use Quick Books but stopped using it 3 years ago. Sorry I can't help on that one.

So how do like working on a Mac? I discovered there is an ActiveRain Mac User group but it took a while to locate how it was listed. I am guessing that you and I could be responsible , if we write enough, to get many others who really want to have a Mac to go ahead and get one. With the MLS and Standard Forms now available to us on the Mac side, there should be a lot less resistance. I had a lot of issues to over come in learning this new OS X system but as I get to over coming the issues, I am loving it and especially the speed of which I can do things and also the amazing amount of mulitasking it allows.

William, What a huge change!  I watch my daughter and friends who have Macs and they look like so much fun.  I have always been reluctant to change because of the compatibility issues.  It sounds like your MLS is leading the way...it will be years before it gets here.  I so admire you for your constant willingness to try new technology!

Hi Diane,

I suspect that with this new solution there should be no reason that all the MLS's don't take the needed steps to make this available to everyone. Mac users are dedicated to their operating system and there may yet be another surge in people switching from the PC to the MAC. It is an interesting day that we live. Frankly the OS X operatin system seems to work so much better than the PC ever did. We just get used to things on a PC and once the software developers see opportuity, they will make programs that offset much of the advantage that PC have enjoyed. We all don't prefer one car but essentially they all have the same basic features. Go for it and lead your own way, is my motto.

Great post William! I must admit, being a pro mac user, the virtualization process (I use Parallels) can be daunting. Hopefully this Citrix thing can be a good solution for a lot of mac users out there.

I have recently purchased a new Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz and the MLS runs fatser on it than the computer at work. Amazing.

Hello Nogui, thanks for the feedback, I am still trying to get things to work in a seamless way. The Citrix works OK, but things are not as clear. They type looks a bit like dots but  guess that will improve eventually. I use the parallels to run in IE and it is very very slow so I prefer the Citrix on the Mac side.

I switched from a PC to a Mac last August and LOVE it! The only reason I have parallels is for the MLS. One question, is there an e-mail plug in that is tailored to a real estate contact management system? Thanks, Lisa

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST.  I just ordered a new macbook pro, and figured I would have to do boot camp or parallels to access my MLS, as I have been fighting this with them for about 15 years. (I finally bought a PC)  I printed up your post, highlighted the good stuff, practiced my language ( to minimize 4 letter words and maximize tech talk), and called my MLS.  "Can you....."

"Why would we need to do all that?... You've been able to access MLS with a Mac for at least 2 years".  Who knew?

So thanks, you were the wind beneath by mac screen!

What is interesting is that our regional is also web based but it is based on Internet Explorer and was not accessible in Safari or Firefox. However with Citrix installed, it works with Firefox. The only reason  am not currently using it on forms, is that when you do lo gin, everything looks like a half tone. The letters are faint and are formed with open dots ( pixels) and it is much harder to read. The forms print OK but it is harder to read the forms. Remember dot matrix printers set in low resolution, it looks like that only more faint. :-)

I currently use Virtual Machine, to access the MLS on my MacBook.  I previously used Parallels, but found it very unstable and difficult to share with the mac side, however, I love using the Virtual Machine software!

i recently switched from Windows machine to iMac. I have had difficulty with the Denver, Colorado Metrolist MLS web-based system ("MyMLS"). Upon calling them they said the system was built around Internet Explorer, so some functions may not work with Firefox & Safari. Therefor I am curious about the Citrix solution and the Virtual Machine solution mentioned above. Which website would I need to go to? Which product/download? Also: do you have a suggestion for a Mac-based contact management software system (similar to windows-based Agent2000 or OnLine Agent or Top Producer)?

Best solution of Citrix ICA Client Editor, I do believe still requires your MLS to add a component ( but not sure). Using IE  with Parallells or Virtual Machine works fine if Citrix  not available.

The only contact management program is an on-line program called REST. I have heard good things but have made no further determination as to if I will subscribe to it. But it markets itself as compatible since you can use firefox or safari with it. I would guess that if it uploads contacts from Address Book, syncs with imail, that should be all that is required. Good Luck with your new Mac!

I have been looking at switching over to a mac - I think that with all of the photo editing/video stuff I do that it would be perfect for me - but I am having the issue with the mls as well. Our mls people say that by early next year it will all work with a mac.

The programs that you can install to a mac to make mls (we are mlxchange) - how much do these cost? I am trying to make a decision soon... only hold up is this issue. I obviously need to get on my mls :)
