A Walk Along the Batiquitos Lagoon Trail

in South Carlsbad, California

Underside of a palm tree at the Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad - Jeff Dowler

Carlsbad is blessed with 3 beautiful lagoons, for residents and visitors to enjoy. Significant efforts have been spent over the years to preserve these bodies of water and, in the case of the Batiquitos Lagoon in South Carlsbad, to create a wildlife preserve and walking trails.

The Batiquitos Lagoon in South Carlsbad, California - Jeff DowlerThe Batiquitos Lagoon, in my view, is the most beautiful. Even the main road off the freeway that runs along the lagoon (La Costa Avenue, with Encinitas to the South) affords one wonderful views of this natural wonder and the hills of Aviara, an affluent residential community in South Carlsbad anchored by the well-known Park Hyatt Aviara Resort (formerly the Four Seasons).

There are miles of walking trails through the woods along the lagoon and with views of the Aviara golf course. Bird watching is abundant, especially egrets and great blue herons that nest in the trees.

Fishing, swimming, and boating are not permitted, although once per year folks can venture out on the lagoon in kayaks as part of the annual clean-up

There are several areas for people to park and begin their walks, and many who live in the nearby homes of Aviara simply walk across the street. You will often find dogs accompanying their owners, and strollers, and runners, are a common sight as well.

The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation is dedicated to the preservation, protection and enhancement of this wonderful resource.

Hi Jeff, Not only a RES presentation but video tour self narrated. This is very interesting and  a subject that prior to this, I knew little about.  6 miles of trails, I think beats Torry Pines.

William - it really is a great place to walk, and not hilly at all, unlike Torrey Pines. AND you can treat yourself to lunch after a walk at the Argyle Restaurant at the Golf Club overlooking the course and the lagoon.

Jeff I don't think that I have ever seen a lagoon.  What makes a body of water a lagoon????

George - here's a better definition than I can give you. THis lagoon is tidal salt water since it is connected to the ocean, as opposed to being a lake.
