Buying a new computer soon? WAIT!

Real Estate Agent with Realty Professionals, Inc.

Are you in the market for a new computer system?  I was!  I went and purchased a new computer last Friday and was excited about all it had on it.  I was busy over the weekend so I had to wait until Monday to set it up.  I was almost like a little kid that couldn't wait to play with his new toy!

This system had a dual, quad core processor, 8 gig memory, 750 gig hard drive and a 22 inch monitor and was using Vista.  I really love my XP but I knew that is the way everything is going so I thought I would bite the bullet and get use to it.  I disconnected my old computer and moved it out of the way for the new kid on the block (ha ha).  I get it all out of the box and put it in the place where my old computer sat.  BOOM!  I turned it on and sat back and looked at the nice, huge monitor and thought this was cool.  I personalized the screen, set up the interent and set up all of my e-mail information.  Everything was good so far and I thought this isn't bad, I don't know what everyone was complaining about.  I started to setup my printers and my color printed initialized with no problem but my laser printer wouldn't work.  I searched the internet and was able to locate a fix and about 30 minutes later I had it running.  Again, I thought cool, this wasn't so bad.

I had worked on this all morning and was about 1:00 pm and I thought I need to go to lunch but I thought that I need to setup my Palm Desktop Software.  I thought it wouldn't take to long and since everything else went pretty smooth I wouldn't have a problem.  I put the Palm cd in and it loaded the software.  It told me to connect the phone up to the usb cable to do a hot sync (this is where you sync up your computer and phone so they will have the same information).  As soon as I hooked it up, the computer said I do not have a driver for this hardware and to do a search.  It searched the internet and couldn't locate one, I had it search the Palm cd and it didn't have one, I un-installed the software and reinstalled it thinking something went wrong on the installation and it still didn't work.  I then decided to do a search about my issue and quickly found that PALM DOES NOT SUPPORT 64 BIT OPERATING SYSTEMS, period.  I didn't know where to turn and was able to find a fix to be able to do the hot sync but you would need to make your computer blue-tooth acceptable.  After further research, many have said this didn't work very good and if it did it would be slower that the usb.  Also, since I used the usb to e-sync my phone with our real estate software, I would not be able to do that anymore.  Oh, I was getting very irritated.  Yes, I know I can use wireless for this operation but I would need to add a data package just to e-sync and I didn't want to do that.  (I know I would be able to search the internet etc.. But I really didn't care about doing that).  I contacted CARMLS and they tried to help and we even called SUPRA but the guy with SUPRA said that Palm will not work with a 64 bit operating system.

After that disappointment with the Palm products I thought I would go ahead and install my desktop scanner.  This is not just any scanner, if you have ever used the Fujitsu scanners you know that this is something that every Realtor needs.  It is an auto feeder system and will do 15 pages per minute, both sides and in full color and will create a pdf file of the scanned items.  I have had this for about 4 years and love it.  I nearly use it everyday and consider it just as important as my Palm smart phone.  Well guess what?  It won't work on a 64 bit operating system either.  I went to Fujitsu's website and they don't have any solutions yet as well.  It looked like they were looking into it but I couldn't locate a fix.  NOW I WAS REALLY IRRITATED!

I thought that I will just have to find a computer that will do what I need it to do and return this one.  I uninstalled everything and boxed the system back up and returned it to Best Buy.  While there, I visited with one of the Geek Patrol and salesman and they only had three systems that had a 32 bit operating system and they were really no better than what I had except they were new.  You need to know that a 64 bit processor is not the same as 64 bit operating system.  If you have more the 4 gig of memory then you have a 64 bit operating system.  If you are unsure, click on the Start button in the bottom left corner, right click on Computer and then click on Properties, there you it will tell you what your operating system is.

I hope this will be helpful to you.  You need to know this on the front end because if you buy this 64 bit operating system, you may have to also replace some hardware that you have been using.  I know this is probably what I have to do but was not prepared at this time.  I consider myself kind of techie but I also think if it is not broke then don't fix it.  I love my TREO and my scanner and will eventually have to replace them because of the change in technology and support.  You also need to know this is you are going to be buying any new hardware like printers scanner and smart phones to make sure they are compatible with a 64 bit operating system.  Also, Microsoft is coming out with Windows 7 that will replace Vista and XP.  I have done some research into this and it looks really good but it is still in BETA and will be towards the end of the year before it will be released.

********************   NEW INFORMATION Since 4:00 pm 2-17-2009   **************

The scanner from Fujitsu called me today and said they have a fix for the 64 Bit operating system and they will be mailing it out to me on a cd.  I asked about a download and they said they had to mail the cd.  So that is great news!  She also told me that there is no guarantee but most of the people she has talked to, it worked.  We'll have to see!

Larry, computers though the lifeblood of a small business, are aggravating... or perhaps, it is because they are the lifeblood that they re so aggravating?

Larry - thanks for posting this. I am in the market for a new pc and have my palm connected to my old Palm Pilot and Supra. Thanks for the tip about the incompatibility of both. I need to check this out.

What a horrible experience.  I'm sticking with the 'ain't broken don't fix it' system until I must make a change. Thanks for the 64 vs 32 info education.

If you go 32 bit you are REALLY limiting yourself. Sure your scanner wont work but with 32 bit you can only have 3.2 gb of memory and I would rather have more memory than a scanner. Especially a 4 year old scanner as nice as it is there is something newer, faster and probably cheaper. Its probably so old they dont even update the software for it anyways which is why its not available in 64 bit. Very few things cant run on 64 bit now.

I need a new computer but I want it all to play nice together... I am not good at the irritation and frustration part of technology. I want the Palm Pre, have a Palm Centro now...

I see this has helped and I am glad.  Yes, I believe we will need to go to the new 64 bit operating system but if you are looking to buy new hardware then make sure it will operate on the 64 bit operating system.  The 64 bit OS will allow you to have alot more memory therefore making it faster.  I have also been told that alot of new software will start requiring more memory so you will not be able to use the 32bit OS.  This blog was to let you know that we are in the middle of some changes and you could pay for something that won't help you.  I have told many people before that as soon as you purchase something in technology, tomorrow it will be old news.  Good luck in your technology adventures.

This blog has a lot of good information.  I hate that you spent all morning and then sent it all back!  I tried to see what my system is by your directions but didn't find out.  Guess you're speaking above my head, as usual!!

In checking my system it shows 64 x 2.  Does that mean it is a 64 bit system?  I too use the ScanSnap scanners (have 3 of them in my office) and they all work fine on our systems.  Perhaps the difference is that I am purposely using XP and not Vista? Good information in your post.  Thanks for sharing.
