Do We Take it For Granted?

By
Home Stager with Independent

I was watching Property Shop on HGTV last night.  Part of the focus of the show was on Agent Safety.  The agents in the office were buzzing about news that a Real Estate Agent had been murdered.  Tatiana Londono, the office's broker brought her team together to discuss the issue and also discuss a time when she had been attacked while showing a condo.

This really got me thinking.  Do we take our own personal safety on our jobs for granted?  It really doesn't matter if you are a Real Estate Agent or Home Stager safety should be at the top of our list!

As an instructor I am always discussing the safety issues that come along with the Real Estate Industry.  It is not to say we have to always have to be looking over our shoulder but just be aware.

Here are some tips:

Always be aware of your surroundings and who is in those surroundings

Home Stagers:

Never use cutlery on tables

  •  First off it adds to the clutter of the space
  •  It can be easily accessible by children who may be visiting the property's with their parents
  •  Can be a potential safety hazard

Never Use Kitchen Knife Blocks

  •  They don't look very aesthetically pleasing on the counters
  •  Can be used as a potential safety hazard or weapon

When staging any home when the homeowners will not be there:

  • Ask the homeowners or the agent if they are expecting anyone to show up at the home and what time they are expected to be there.
  • Never answer the door unless you are expecting someone
  • Always lock the door behind you when you have entered the home
  • Always let someone you know where you are going to be that day and the expected length of the job
  • Make sure you cell phone is fully charged and keep the charger with you just in case

Agents:

Make sure your office or someone close to you knows your appointments for the day

When conducting open houses

  • Ensure the knife blocks etc have been tucked away
  • Lock the door to the home so potential visitors will have to ring the bell first - this will help you control the flow of traffic coming into the home
  • Make sure everyone signs in.
  • Keep your cell phone charged and keep the charger with you

This is just a friendly reminder for all not to take our personal safety for granted.

This is confirmation! I was just having a conversation about this topic this morning with a friend. He is very concerned about my safety since we just heard about a Realtor that was robbed ( by gunpoint) while showing a property.

As a stager, I check on my vacant properties. Before entering the house, I always ring the doorbell and wait and listen. If there were a burglar inside (yes, they really do break into vacant homes!), he would probably run out the back instead of wanting to confront someone. Better to let them run, than to be confronted by someone who feels trapped and could hurt you to get out. I always say: be aware, so you don't have to be afraid. Stay safe everyone.

Recently I was staging a vacant house in a lovely area surrounded by hills. My cell phone connection? Zero. Zip. Nada. While blanancing up on a ladder one evening by myself, it occurred to me that if I fell, for instance, nobody knew where I was or how to reach me...much less for me to be able to dial from my cell phone for help. I was relieved to find a land-line in the kitchen with a working dialtone. But it was a reminder to let others know where I was and how long I was expected to be there.

Thanks for the important reminders, Kimberly!

Alot of my clients have found that our 3D floor plans that can viewed online of listings cut down on showings, especially showings to people that are notinterested in the home and that could potentially be dangerous.  We also provide a service that digitally stages a home by using 3D technology.  Thus takes out the threat of staging with anything tangible that could be harmful.

Kimberly-great ideas and reminders. I always cringe when I go into a home with a realtor and he/she leaves the key in the door. I always take the key with me and immediately lock the door as soon as I'm inside.

I also instruct clients to place the knife blocks out of site, whenever working with people who will be living in their homes while on the market.

Another idea, although not so much a safety factor is that when I have a key to the home, I put it on a stretchy armband that stays on my arm the entire time I'm in the home. Hearing horror stories of being accidentally locked outside prompted me to adopt this strategy early on!
