Driving back from Denver from Santa Fe, Dev and I decided to take a roundabout route back. Taos, NM was the last town before we cut back to 285 and headed for home. But, it was well worth the diversion. What a welcome surprise Taos was.
We drove in only to find out that one of its biggest summer festivals was going on and that the street fair made for a welcome relief from the long drive home. Taking in the music and the vendors, we finally meandered down a side alley and came up to a quaint shopping area. Signs made in the old English wooden style advertised the sellers wares.
Dogs and their owners sauntered along the cobblestones while a musician played his guitar in the style of Simon and Garfinkel. But, after walking around for a long while, the cafes (and there were quite a few) beckoned to be tried and tasted. With our own dog lying under a tree, we sat in the open air section, sipping Mimosas and eating our light lunch, thinking that there was no better way to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon.
While we were there, an annual event was going on. Brightly colored tents seemed to be everywhere, and a parade was starting to meander down the main street through the town. Everyone seemed to be out to enjoy it. It's amazing what you will find when you just take a side road.
There are plenty of affordable vacation rentals in Taos if you plan on going skiing this year!
