Capitalism Isn't Failing

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, Lancaster PA RS134746A

I'm hearing more and more reports from the media these days that capitalism is failing, mostly because of  "greedy business people".  "Greed" is a judgment-laden word that has been the cause of much of the attack on capitalism.  I would much rather describe it as "human self-interest".  Government is not going to change human nature.  Whatever government decrees, people will find a way to circumvent it.

A free people will make the best decisions for themselves they can for the conditions at hand.  The one thing they can't make good decisions for is uncertainty.  And that is exactly what our government is now providing.  As Congress and the President endlessly tinker with economic policy, many logical individuals are unwilling to put money in banks, real estate or the stock market.  Can you blame them?

Government policies may lower interest rates - or raise them due to inflationary fears.  Spending trillions of dollars is debasing our currency.  Constant changes in policy lowers the public confidence.

And then we're told that capitalism isn't working?  I beg to differ.  These policies aren't capitalism failing.  They're socialism failing.

The American people have been raped, aided and abetted by the government stooges that are supposed to regulate and oversee the Wall Street gangs.

Wait until the American people are fed up.  JUST WAIT.  There's a day of reckoning coming.

Aloha Brian,

I think what's failing is peoples faith in financial institutions that bilk them indiscriminately while Congress deregulates without over-site; passing the costs to tax payers. Usury was illegal for milinnia for good reason. This is an adjustment and like all things it too shall pass. Corruption in Captialism doesn't work.

Peace,

You're right - it wasn't capitalism failing. It was government interferance with capitalism,- the financial system, forcing them into the bad business practice of lending to unworthy, high risk borrowers - (community re-investment act). Don't worry, the congress said, Fannie and Freddie will back it up - creating a false sense of low risk - worked out great, didn't it?

Brian

You are so right on this one.  I am just sick of watching a socialist agenda tear at the fabric of our great country.

Lenn, the rumblings of discontent are only just beginning...

Aloha, Kimo - Corruption in capitalism isn't capitalism - it's corruption.  It's cronyism at its worst, when insiders in either government or the private sector hand each other favors that aren't available to the public.

Susan, Fannie and Freddie cooked the books.  Some of those who abetted them are still helping create policy, instead of facing jail terms.

Trey, we're on a slippery slope here.  Some of the "temporary" new departments and budgets will be with us forever.

Fran, true capitalism is a natural phenominon, like a forest.  It goes in natural cycles of fire and regrowth.  When we attempt to eliminate natural fires, the eventual conflagration becomes much worse.

Attempts to control interest rates, prices, or failing businesses only cause unnatural distortions somewhere else.

Brian - what too many fail to see is that capitalism is the only economic practice that has demonstrated, over and over and over again, that it can and does succeed in lifting people out of poverty. Yet it is condemned because some get more than others, and, yes, there are some who "game" the system and hurt other.

Mike, you're exactly right.  Capitalists expect equal opportunities.  Socialists demand equal results.  The results are never equal, nor should they be.

Equal results removes the incentive to work hard, innovate, and take risks in the quest for economic rewards.  That's why socialism has never worked.  Look at the results of the former USSR, Cuba, and an assortment of other "utopian" dictatorships.

Thank you, Everard!  If you ever read Animal Farm, by George Orwell, a similar point was made in the story of farm animals who tried to reorganize their workload along communist lines...

People that tend to bash capitalism just don't read history books.  More has been accomplished to set humanity higher via capitalism than all other social systems combined.  And the American age is the crowning achievement.  Ever since the founding generation there has been a tension between excessive government control and private enterprise and contribution.  Now the pendulum will swing a bit further until Lenn's "just you wait" moment happens and the revolution begins anew.

Jeff, the winds of resistance are already beginning to blow.  I hope we don't swing out of control before a majority of our citizens and leaders start coming to their senses.

Brian, the rumblings of discontent really are just beginning, as you said to Lenn. We had protesters on Capital Hill in Downtown Nashville this week. Nashville is not known for protesting so this is a huge sign.

Connie, that's interesting.  I heard about protests in Phoenix, too.  If there's enough feedback from the people , maybe eventually they'll listen - but it won't be easy.
