Take Your Dog to the Beach at Dog Beach in Del Mar, California

Dog Beach in Del Mar California - Jeff Dowler

Dog Beach in Del Mar, also know as North Beach to area residents, is probably one of the better known beaches in our area, at least to dog owners and their dogs. And it's not far from Carlsbad either.

There are limited places at the beach when dogs can frolic (unleashed, even, from Labor Day until June 18) with other dogs and their owners, and Dog Beach is undoubtedly the best known. I get questions from buyers frequently about where they can take their dogs, so having a place like Dog Beach to refer them to is great. You will see dogs, and owners, of all shapes and sizes and on a crowded day it's quite a sight.

Parking can get hairy on the weekends and especially during the summer, unless you are willing to walk a distance (on street parking is on the west side of the coast road just north of the beach). Know that the parking IS NOT free - there is a honor pay machine and woe be to those who try to park and enjoy the beach without paying. You might get away with it, but the fines can be stiff, so it's hardly worth being cheap.

The beach is located at the north end of town just before Solana Beach (at the north end of the Del Mar Beach Colony). The San Dieguito River flows into the ocean here, forming a natural boundary. BTW it's not a shabby part of the beach to by - nearby homes on the market currently range from $14,000,000 to about $20,000,000 - there's a $50 M listing about ¼ further south with beach frontage.

Dogs and horses have so much fun at the beach. It's not the dogs who cause problems at beaches; it's their owners who don't have manners that cause the problems. Ahhh, the good old days growing up in Lanikai with no rules.

Hey Jeff - Great post.  Good to hear that you guys have dog friendly beaches.  One of my favorite beaches in the OC is a dog beach.  Even though I no longer have a dog, I love to take a break from my bike rides and watch the dogs and their owners play together.  It's a very centering experience.

Have a great week!

Jeff OK, sorry but I have to ask.  When you go to "Dog Beach" do you have to keep your eyes down and watch were you step, or do pet owners scoop it up :) :) :)

Sheldon - well we have those too. There are all sorts of beaches here in SoCal.

Susie - how true. I have never ridden a horse on teh beach but would like to sometime.

Bill - well it won't be TOO long. Although as I recall Feb and March in New England always seemed to last forever.

Marlene - I no longer have dogs either, but this be a MUST VISIT place if I did.

Kelly - so when R U and Zoey coming out to enjoy?

George - well you should ALWAYS watach where you are stepping on the beach. LOL  But dog owners are good about taking care of theirs pooches - if not, they would get run off the beach by others.

Patricia - the dogs seem to enjoy it more than their owners sometimes.

Jeff, this is such helpful information for dog owners.  Dog parks and beaches are a special treat.  I had no idea Del Mar had a dog beach.  I learn so much every time I read one of your posts about your communities!
