Virginia Horse Farms - Horses, Dogs and the Virginia Country Life

Virginia Horse Farms - horses, dogs and the Virginia Country Life. The one thing that I would wish for anyone is to have a passion in their life.  You know, that thing that makes you get up in the morning, ready to greet the day.  I learned a long time aPam and a favorite horsego that I am about horses, dogs and the Virginia countrylife.  It takes having all of those elements in my life to make me happy.  Sure I enjoy a trip to New York every now and then to see the galleries and get my "culture fix", but when it comes to my everyday life there is no place that can make me as happy as the Virginia countryside.  And the Virginia countryside for me is Virginia horse farms.

For me this love of the country began early.  I have been horse crazy for almost as long as I can remember.  Growing up I was never happier than when I was viewing the world from the top of a horse.  And ultimate bliss was riding across country with my friends or following hounds in an exhilarating chase over fences and through the woods.  As I grew older, went away to college and actually lived in another part of the country, I realized first hand how special the Charlottesville Virginia area is.  To live in a place where there are still large tracts of rolling hills and meadows with one Virginia horse farm after another is becoming increasingly rare.

The love of horses, dogs and the Virginia countryside really translates into a lifestyle.  Its the priveledge of being able to ride or walk with my dogs through miles of pasture and fields without looking at development.  This scenic rural country is what makes Albemarle County so special and unique.  It is this very lifestyle that makes people want to relocate here, and that is not necessarily a bad thing, but we have to be very careful to control that growth and to limit where it can take place.  I am a passionate supporter of land preservation and conservation easements as a tool to help preserve large tracts of land and ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy life in the Virginia country that is a part of the fabric of my being.  I realize that not everyone can afford to own a Virginia horse farm orfields and mountains necessarily wants to, but most people relish the opportunity to have the beautiful views and scenic country to drive through.

For me the joy of living on a Charlottesville horse farm is the peace of  falling asleep listening to the soft hoot of the owl outside my bedroom window.  Or to wake up and take an early morning walk across the fields with the Ridgeback loping alongside and a corgi scampering at my heels.  How many times have you watched a family of wild turkeys poke across the backyard with the young following single file walking in that silly turkey walk?   Have you watched a large red fox playing like a cat, carelessly leaping into the air as the first snowflakes fall?  Or stood in your driveway and watched a black bear amble along down by the creek with the moment of recognition as it turns to look up the hill at you, locking eyes and then turning to slowly mosey off unafraid.  There is the pure pleasure of watching the horses play in the padocks of my Virginia horse farm on a cool morning right after they have been turned out, or watch the dogs snoring in a heap by the fire, worn out after a day of busily making sure that that everthing at the farm runs according to their approval.  All of these memories and many more make up the fabric of a life with horses and dogs in Virginia horse country.

Virginia truly has some of the most beautiful countryside scenery that I've ever seen. Having been blessed to live in Arlington, VA for 2 years while my husband was stationed at Ft Myer, we would take weekend trips through the Shenandoah and all the small towns on the way. It was gorgeous. Very nice post!

Pam- I enjoyed getting to know you a little better.  I adore your area of the country, and good for you for tring to keep it as pristing as it is...we have enough development in my opinion.  I would feel like I died and went to heaven if I saw a bear walking by a creek....one of these days I'm coming to Virginia for sure.
