Big Sky Sunrise - Red Lodge, Montana

By
Education & Training

After posting sunset photos in my last post Big Sky Sunset - Red Lodge, Montana, I thought it would be appropriate to follow up with a post with sunrise photos.  They are photos of the sunrise (clouds attached) taken on September 25, 2008 taken from the Grizzly Peak subdivision and close to Ski Run (the 6 miles road which leads to Red Lodge Mountain).  The sun is rising from behind the Pryor Mountains.  It was the beginning of another beautiful day in Red Lodge, MT.  As in my last post, I am showcasing a broader view of the scenery and the sky in my first photo and a close-up view of the same sky in the second photo to better display the more vibrant colors.

Lenn,

Thank you for sharing your happy memories of Red Lodge.  I am assuming you experienced the scenic drive on the 53.7 miles Beartooth Highway between Cooke City and Red Lodge.  The Beartooth Highway (reaching heights of nearly 11,000 feet and with spectacular views of snow-capped peaks), has been described by former CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt as 'the most beautiful drive in America'.  You are very welcome to come and visit Red Lodge again.   The small town hospitality is still very much present.

Gail,

I have not heard or seen any destruction of the forests as a result of the logging industry in the area of Red Lodge.  Most of the cutting around here has been for fire management purposes.  The only destruction of forest I am aware of happened through fires ((Mother Nature's way for rebirth of the forest).  There was a wildfire who destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of forest in Yellowstone Park in 1988. We had a fire scare in the summer of 2008 with a little over 10,000 acres of forest destroyed and the fire getting within a few miles of town and of Red Lodge's ski mountain resort before it was contained.  We were very fortunate and needless to say we were very thankful and proud of all the firefighting crews (most of them volunteers) who contained the fire after weeks of valiant effort.

Patt,

Thank you.  They sure are lots of great photo opportunities in and around Red Lodge especially for great outdoor and nature photos.  I can not help but carry my digital camera wherever I go (you never know with all the pleasant surprises from Mother Nature).

Even more proof than your sunset photos that Montana rightfully lays claim to "Big Sky Country"!  The sunsets are dramatic, but the sunrise is almost calming, even with a similar color palette.  Very nice work!

Randy,

Thank you.   It is hard to go back to sleep when for some reason you wake up right before the sunrise time.   It is too good of a view to miss out on once you realize that each sunrise is beautiful to watch and is always a little different from the previous ones.

The yellows/oranges in these pictures are amazing. I'm far more used to sunsets than sunrises.

Christine,

I was also amazed at the brighter and intense yellow/orange colors of this sunrise.  I am glad I was able to nicely capture them with my digital camera and to be able to share them on-line.
