Social Media

While social media is taking the Internet by storm many of the newcomers not familiar with the platform can easily start making boo boo's. Now I know I'll get some flak for using the word ‘boo boo' but it got your attention didn't it?

The more we can share these simple ‘Boo Boos' the better experience all of us will have in social media. Remember, we are all connected in some way like it or not and you can choose to be a spectator in social media marketing or a participant.

Which do you choose?

Ok, let's get down to the ‘10 Boo Boos in Social Media Marketing'

1. You have no ‘user avatar'...or your user avatar is neither a personalized photograph nor reflective of a brand.

If that square is empty, impersonal, or otherwise lacking any qualities that will immediately allow me to visually associate it with you that is an immediate boo boo. If I am going to build a relationship with you, I want to see you or your brand.

2. You list no location, no website, or no bio - Remember it's all about making connections and building relationships. For business purposes people have to get to know you, like you, and trust you before they would ever want to do business with you. Listing a web site is another tool for sharing your business with others. You'll be surprised how many friends will check out your site without ever letting you know they did.

3. You're following over 1,000 people on Twitter and have only 10 followers, and no updates.
Don't get follow crazy and think that you will somehow build a mass following overnight. Not only will your account be suspended if you reach the ‘mass follow threshold' with no one following you but you will have also wasted the most precious thing you have, TIME! Target the people you follow and provide value in what you tweet. Stay focused on your brand and build that following so it's a tight niche community.

4. Your activity is only focused on pushing your own service/products

So, if you have decided to use social media marketing as an online marketing tool in order to sell your amazing product and/or service that's great but don't become a social spammer. As my friend Doug Firebaugh puts it "Focus on creating value." Share tips, resources, articles, and engage in conversations.

5. Your conversations indicates a stream for consistent arguing

If your posts or conversations are filled with nothing but mean-spirited opinions and argumentation that only advance your own beliefs and allow no consideration of others' views, then many people will be turned away.

While this is meant to be a simple starter list I can tell you that practicing the habit of daily improvement will result in tremendous growth for you and your business over time.

Simply reading this note indicates that you are an advocate for self improvement and I admire that. We can always grow and learn from one another.

While the 'Boo Boo' list can easily be expanded I wanted to cover the basics first. Feel free to share some of your 'Boo Boos' by adding a comment below so others can learn as well.

Let's continue to look out for one another because isn't that what friends are for?

Remember - "Every mistake is a lesson and every opportunity is a blessing." ~ Cristina D. Baines

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Make it a great day!

I really like these tips and find that they follow along with my own sense of how these things should work.  We usually focus on a "give before you get" philosophy so our tweets tend to highlight neighborhood info, what we do throughout our day so people really see what agents do, finance and housing info, and other general details about our areas of coverage.  For those that don't tweet often but who also have a blog, I find that coming up with tweets is like making a short list of blog post headings - they are often great as starter material for a post on our many blog sites.

The biggest point I agree with you on the most is the element of not showing a combative personality.  Why on earth would you want to portray this as how you are on a daily basis?  I wouldn't want to work with that kind of person in any field/profession.

I haven't read part 2 yet, but I look forward to it.
