Highest & Best Use...does it apply to you?

Demolishing the Lord & Taylor store in Park Meadows, Lone Tree ColoradoMy heart skipped a beat today as I approached my favorite mall at Park Meadows in Lone Tree.  The demolition  had begun on the Lord and Taylor store, it looked like the setting of a bombing.

No, it isn't a terrorist attack, just an economic decision to tear down a perfectly good store to replace it with an outdoor walking mall.  The soon to be gone store is less than 10 years old!  It was a beautifully done department store whose demise came along after it was sold to a competitor (I think Macy's) that is already at the mall.  Instead of having two stores of the same company in the mall, it has to go.

This got me to thinking about my personal "highest and best use."  I know what I should be doing, but am I doing it?  Well most of the time yes, but in reality, I should be doing more.

Focusing on my highest and best use will keep me on the right track.  I make rain.

How about you?

I thought you had taken a picture of New Orleans until I read your notes. It didn't rain on me today but the humidity was below 50% for the first time since May. I am getting a great chance to be a great grand pa and have 3 grandsons under 2 years old.

Eric you compound my frustration at seeing a perfectly good building laid to waste, while we have people still unsettled from Katrina.  I know business is business, but sometimes it just doesn't make sense.

Are you a "Great" Grandpa or a Great Great Grandpa?

I'm merely a great, Grammy.  two grandsons. (perfect they are!)

I'm torn.... On one hand I want to discuss my highest and best use.  BUT you got me thinking about shopping.

Macy's just came to my area after buying out Marshall Fields (which used to be Hudson's).  The Macy's store is dirty.  I wanted to mop the floors.  YUCK!  I'll stick to my favorites... Target and Saks Fifth Ave. I'm a bipolar shopper!

:)

Shopping?  I mentioned shopping?  Our Foley's just became Macy's.  They changed everything around in the store so now I have to have my brain rebooted to find things.  I've been doing it in bits and pieces...almost there!  Our Macy's is spotless.

Thanks for the wake up call! Did some one say Nordstrom -- I LOVE their shoes.

If I were to put my time to it's highest and best use, I'd have to rush to my local Lord & Taylor to make sure they stay in business.  It's always been one of my favorite stores and shopping is definitely one of the things I do best.

I rarely go shopping to places like Macys. Not many guys like to go to malls when they get to do what they want. I enjoy shopping on the internet. Krystal and Geri have you ever bought shoes on the net, lol. I think malls are great for other people. The ones in Houston have Merry-go-rounds which is a nice touch.

I always wonder "who decides what the highest and best use is?" We have to allow for progress, I guess.

As for your question, I don't have an answer. I do not know what my highest and best use is. I wear so many different hats that its hard to find the time to even think.

How do you make rain?

Dena, Villa is now Belmar, have you been there?  It's really awesome. It looks like a new Asbury Park (N.J. exit 100) now.

The Lord and Taylor site will be another open air mall very posh and pretty.  To bad about the old store, it was the Joslins once, a favorite of mine.

Karen, I do a rain dance on the computer...it sends me good things via the internet...leads. Search Denver real estate, Denver Realtor, living in denver, relocating to denver

Karen, Nordstroms has great shoes and they DO take AR points...

Rory, shopping is never economically obsolete!  silly boy.

Highest and best use? Well, there are days when I'm there...then, there are other days...when I'm wearing my shopping hat at our newest Premium Outlet Mall.

Yeah, we have one of the oldest, outdoor (non-enclosed) malls at Oak Brook Center with Bloomie's Home Store, Norstroms, L&T, and Fields...now Macy's. It's charming. Lots of flowers. Great for walking in good weather.

Our outlet mall just opened...maybe two years ago with Coach, Reebok, Liz Claiborne, Chico's, Ann Taylor and some restaurants if you get hungry. Lots of great bargains.

But, I still prefer Nordstroms for my shoes.

Eileen, This is another example of a post drifting. I'm not sure how it got hijacked, but welcome to the mall.  ;)

I'm sure Rory & Eric appreciate being here with us all!

The trends change. Some day they will tear down the outdoor mall and build an indoor mall again. I prefer the outdoor.

Robert, you are so right.  Live long enough and old becomes new again!

Outdoor is good as long as it's not north facing!

Funny how I started by wanting to comment on highest and best uses as well, but then as always I read sara lipnitz comments, you see she is beating me and I hate to lose, so I think about her in my sleep (not in the way you all are thinking)  but I had to agree....I was a J.L. Hudsons guy my entire life.  Hudsons is a big part of Detroit, the city I love, I took it with a grain of salt when Chicago's Marshall Fields took it over....but Macy's I cant stand it....I threw out my new macy's credit card when they sent it to me and I haven't been back since....I'm mourning

Joshua,

It's funny how one store snags our loyalty even after it's long gone!
