What do Realtors expect mortgage guys to blog about?

By
Mortgage and Lending with The best place EVER!

I am a little curious as to what Realtors expect from a loan officer?  As I am searching through some of the top bloggers, I see Realtors that post a separate blog for each of their listings.  These are some of the top scoring agents on this site.  I really don't see a problem with that, but it can amount to some HUGE points and increase rankings very quickly.  Of course, they do blog about other things as well and those are all great.

But my question really is what can a mortgage professional talk about over and over again?  Anything I think of is usually already well covered on this site by other people in my field and even some Realtors.  Should I just keep repeating the same things that everyone does?  Should I think outside of the box and create my own niche of nonsense to ramble on about?  Should I post pictures and videos of things that are loan related but not really necessary?

I guess that I assume most people are intelligent and already know most of the things I know.  By looking at other blogs, I realize there are a lot of things that a lot of people don't know anything about.  I guess I could just post blogs about things that are common in the mortgage industry.  People can read them and say, "DUH!  You're a GENIUS for posting that well-known information!"  Or they could say, "Oh wow...I should have known that, thanks for posting it!"

What do you guys think??

I personally think we mortgage brokers should be blogging about how to improve our realtionships with Realtors. Have you seen some of the bashing and pent up frustration on the part of these agents? Its shocking.

Tony, I for one would like to see some up-to-date info on FHA/VA. Over the last few years so many alternatives available have forced these to the background. With current conditions, I believe they will become important again, now that everyone has forgotten how to use them.

Regarding Janet Guilbault's comment above, the only reason we bash lenders is they don't keep promises, and they don't keep us informed. Sometimes it is both, overpromised and do the ostrich thing rather than deliver the bad news.

Tony - I don't think it matters what you blog about.  Let's start with your motivation in blogging.  Why are you doing it?  Why are you doing it here?  Are you doing it elsewhere?

  • A blog post can be a blatant advertisement "Send me your referrals",  (something I am against)
  • It can be newsworthy and educational, (Something I do like)
  • or it can also have an underlying marketing theme (relating to a mailer or other marketing plan you are working)

No matter what it is, just start writing, it'll all fall into place.

How about things people can do to try and clean up their credit.  General things that could apply to a lot of people.  What about things that first time homebuyers need to know about.  They've never gone through it before.  How about explaining what the process is of getting a loan from start to finish and things they can expect to happen.

Hey Mike Mueller, where did you get that active Mike picture thingy at?  I've seen several people that have them with their name in place of rain.

I don't assume :)

you've just got to find your niche - local and other

make yourself a person that gets calls from that niche

if you want to niche something like the MMA, then write about it in a series...

if you want to niche reverse mortgages - then write about it and how local legislation will affect it

but find the couple special programs you like and market those - then market to you area.

Tony,

I was meeting with an excellent CFP in her office the other day and I was telling her about my business.  I told her I primarily focus on FTHB's because my programs are so strong and I take a very consultative approach to my job.  She then asked me, "well do you do refi's too?"  I was stumped as to why she would ask me that because, to me, that is a common fact, of course mortgage brkers do refi's.

I now realize that because we spend so much time with our kind we can lose touch with other peoples perceptions of our industry.  I forgot that before I became a mortgage broker I did not know we existed.  Because I felt like everyone knew what we did I not even mention it, Im glad she asked because she had a referral for me to work on.

Perhaps you can write about exactly what it is we do, why we are not evil and why in some cases our customers are better off with us than at their banks.  How about all the self employed borrowers who have been turned down at the bank and think they need to change all their income documentation when we can simply take them stated.  Thanks.
