When you reach a certain age it's a lot harder to keep the weight off than when you're younger. I'm not sure why that is. Personally speaking I'm as active as ever and make sure we get proper nutrition in every meal.
I guess it has something to do with metabolism...whatever that is.
As I see it the root of the problem is I like to cook. Everyday (weekends excepted) my wife arrives home promptly at 5:27pm from the office and dinner is ready to go on the table. I try to vary things so we're never eating the same dinner two days in a row.
There's where the conundrum arises.... I've never learned to cook in small quantities. Our meals may be healthy....but there's just too darn much healthy on the plate.
I was reading recently that keeping trim has less to do with calories than it does with the quantity of food eaten.....and when. We do love our snacks in the evening. Bedtime isn't complete without a cup of tea and a snack.
The proper way is to eat a large breakfast which will keep us coasting until dinner time with small healthy snacks several times during the day. Dinner should be moderate in size and snacks (healthy or otherwise) should end after dinner.
I know all this, but old habits are hard to change.
Neither my wife or myself are largely over-weight, but I do notice my pants fitting a little tighter these days.
Tomorrow, for sure I'm making a resolution to eat a bigger breakfast and cut down on everything for the rest of the day. We have an exercise room and indoor pool which is rarely used. It's ideal for wintertime exercise when it's too miserable to go outside. Starting tomorrow I'll make good use of them.
With any luck we'll be back in fighting trim by June. And..... think of all the money we'll save on groceries and being able to recycle last years summer duds which will again fit. There's a practical side to everything.
