Did Someone Say Schmalzy?

Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050
Okay! So now we have all have badges. Be honest, with yourself and your fellow Active Rainers. What was the first thought that went through your mind when you first saw them? Mine? Schmalzy! Active Rain Bling!

Now before you go labeling me as an old fuddy duddy, dousing me with tar and feathers and running me out of the proverbial Active Rain township by pushing the delete button, hold on a sec! Being a product of the 60's, I have been known to be quite cool and very open minded. Yeah! Kinda like the Fonz. You know! Cool! Hip! Fag, hanging out the corner of the lips, leather jacket, cycle rider kinda cool... Schmalzy? Me? Banish the thought...

As we all know, bling is the thing. And sometimes all that glitters are not the hokey, gaudy dohickies and sparkling bobbles dangling under the member's pictures when they leave comments. Being a vet, I do not believe that any American Patriot in their right mind would equate all the badges of honor worn by any vet as just more bling pinned on their chest. Heaven forbid!

Those of us who have been in the rain for awhile have been around the block a time or two and we most certainly have earned our battle scars. We have blogged our fingers to the bone, commented on our comments, been loco for localisms, blogged inside, outside, sideways and through. We have earned our stripes, our badges and our points. We have worked together to make this the best real estate blogging that there is and will be. Yes! We were drips and drops long before it was cool. It is about time that we battle scarred vets that have fought the good fight get our badges of courage and wear them proudly for all to see. The badges that differentiate us as being the ones that newbies just joining this community should aspire to. Yes old battle worn AR vets, take your badges and wear them proudly. I am.

BTW, was the word "schmaltzy" used somewhere? Me? Banish the thought...

Wishing all my fellow drips and tweeps a G-r-r-r-reat day... 8-)

Can I comment more than once? I think the picture on the comment is the coolest thing. The badges are ok, but after a while you don't pay any attention to it.

I had to check to see what the badges mean. I am not sure they mean much to anyone outside the AR. For the insiders it quickly shows participation . I enjoyed your lighthearted posts.

Michael, I just got another badge!!  My picture was on your post!  I almost fainted when I saw it.  The only thing I don't like about those stinkin' badges is they show your weakness.  Like how many featured posts you have.   : (   And I  don't have very many.   : (    I need to do better.  Now you have another featured post!!!  You do deserve it more than I do!!!

I wasn't a big fan of the badges at first. But now that the rain drop is smaller and the whole comment box has been re-designed, they don't bother me. Wonder what the next badge will be?

I am hoping to see a proliferation of AR badges, much like the iPhone applications.  :)  Independent designers will figure out a way to create their own, etc.

Hi Michael -- While I don't have the RainMaker badge, and truly don't care if I do or don't, my goal is to create quality posts, and be transparent to potential clients, engage in healthy conversations on here, learn, share, and in the end, you get out of it what you put into it.  If I end up with 5 badges or none, it's about the journey, and hopefully, the knowledge gained, the clients served, and ultimately, increasing the professionalism in our industry.  If I acheive 50% of that, I'm a much better agent, than having not ventured down this path at all.

I think we all want the same things once we realize what AR has to offer those with an open mind and consistent work.

As a newbie with NO STINKIN BADGES, I love that I can get my photo up with 10K pts.... I'm half way there!.  Our pictures are like our logo, and the way you are remembered is by that identification.  The photos have made it so much easier for me to connect with those who I see poppin up all over AR.  It's the same pictures, it seems who are putting in the work.  So, for now, I remain faceless.... but you'll see me soon!

I love it Michael....70 comment and none of them are yours. Great post. To your call earlier today, I am not sure I like them. I am alittle frustrated that many of them are paid for and as you stated for those of us that have been in the Rain and applied ourselves (and I am hardly in that group) it does not seem hardly fair for those that have indeed worked hard. Just MHO

Great post, funny and insightful.  I too love the touch of these badges and think they help bring some cred to each of us.

Really love the term "Rain Bling"!  I don't have the badges yet but when they come I too will enjoy wearing them!!!  I've only been on the site since November but I can't go a day without reading many of these wonderful post and I always think of ActiveRain as resource now when I want to find information in all areas our the real estate industry.

That was well put about the battle scars. I'm sorry to say I think they are 'cheesy'.  Another 60's word that I didn't have to think of using when I saw your post.  At least now they took the AR stamp off my face & I feel alot 'lighter'. How about you?

... a small office, delivering big service!

Badges are really recognition of effort. I propose a "lips" badge for those who "kiss up" with comments!
