After Hours Do You Talk Business or Enjoy The Evening.

Every year it seems I attend more and more functions, Christmas parties, New Year bashes and recently the Governors economic summit and it always seems that when people find out I'm a Realtor it leads to (as my wife says a whole night of) talking Real Estate. We recently sat at a table for eight and each person had a real estate question. Most want to know when their home price will head up or at least stop going down. I usually attend something of this nature every week and I come away with a deal a month because of it. But I have found most just want advice because it's free.

I remember once asking an attorney a question at one of these and he did spend a half hour or so answering but he also sent me a bill. After I called him to see if he was for real, he did let me slide but I think he thought I would probably pay it. I thought maybe I ought to start that to but I think it comes off as being a jerk.

Anyway it does seem to bother the guest that I take whether a friend or my wife and I was wondering what would you do in a case. I can always use the business but is there a point that you just don't talk business.

I would do the following:

Politely answer the question and let the person know that you would love the opportunity to delve more deeply into their question, but in a different venue (hand them your business card), then politely ease the conversation to another topic.  Definately have a way to contact them again to arrange the more apporpriate time.

I agree that all people want is free advice, so as the previous comment said, give them your card and tell them to call you during your working hours and that tonight you are taking a break from business.

It all depends on the situation but yes when I am on "me" time if someone won't let the conversation drop from Real Estate I will politely ask them if we can talk about something else and give them my card for a future conversation.
