Sunshine may be the answer to the recession -- Janice Roosevelt, Ecobroker, ABR, ePRO - Matt Fetick Real Estate Team, Keller Williams - PA & DE

Growing up, when asked "what does your father do for a living?" I proudly answered, "He's Smokey the Bear's helper."

My dad worked for the U.S. Forest Service at a time when conservation wasn't the hot topic that it is today so it was right up my alley to become an Ecobroker. One of the concepts that was new to me, or at least, new in terms of language was "daylighting."

Obvious economic savings from house designs that use natural lighting  include less use of electricity. Less apparent is how good you feel and how that might impact your productivity.

My recent issue of EcoBroker Update talks about studies that show how natural light is the "gold standard" by which the efficacy of artificial lighting technologies is gauged. It points out that people with access to windows and natural light are happier, more productive, and suffer fewer health problems than workers resigned to artificial lighting.

How does it work? Through skylights, efficient windows, light shafts, and  architectural features that allow  light  inside. I loved the example that some  Japanese shopping malls use fiber optic cables from the roof to bring in the light - Hmmmmmmmmmmmm - maybe that's the answer to the recession - more sunshine!

There are regional issues to consider with heat gain vs. heat loss. For more information, see http://www.daylighting.org/.

MORNING JANICE!  I think that natural light does wonders for your mind and senses!  Here in Arizona - we only have a few months out of the year where we can benefit from natural light in our homes (the summer months - things heat up drastically resulting in using more resources to cool our homes) - but when I can open the blinds and let the sun in -- I do!  -- Gabrielle

Gabrielle: Thanks for the comment. I LOVE Tuscon, have only been once but it was the trip of a life time, hiking the mountains, eating as so many great restaurants, and speaking of unusual habitats - what is the bubble thingy I visited?

Janice - I do like a lot of natural light coming into a home, now, if only you can find a skylight that doesn't leak......

Daylighting is the most cost effective solar option for most building owners.  Toplighting, the art of utilizing skylights with lighting controls to shut off artificial lighting, is a art that is not new.  However, most building owners are not aware of the energy efficiency and productivity opportunity available through high performance solutions. Our company was started in 1978 invented the prismatic skylight with the original vision statement, "For an Energy Independent America Through Daylighting."  30 years later, our largest customer, Walmart, has installed our high performance prismatic skylight in over 2,300 of their properties world wide. In Walmart's own calculation, they save over $230 million per year through the use of our product.  Our simple product, with no moving parts and a leak free design, provides the highest level of light transmission with 100% diffusion compared to any other product on the market.  With solutions for residential as well as commercial and industrial buildings, Sunoptics can provide a building owner with a simple solution to the rising cost of energy around the world.  For more information, visit our website at http://www.sunoptics.com or view a simple 2:15 minute video on the subject at http://www.sunoptics.com/video/InfoShow.html .

Grant, thank you so much for this response and the great video. I hop you forwarded it directly to Mike Saunders in Greater Athens (KW) who is looking for skylights that don't leak. I'm sure yours don't :)

Janice -

You've peaked my interest!

I'm going to check this out, I get a lot of daylight in Florida - but have friends who live in the North and feel awful during the winter.

Very Interesting...
