Portland/Metro Better than Goodwill for household donations

By
Real Estate Agent with Zip Realty

I wanted to take this time and share some information about a company that is way better than Goodwill Industries in the Portland/Metro area.

Community Warehouse is a non-profit agency that will donate your old furniture and housewares to local families to create a home.

I find it funny that I have taken my stuff to Goodwill all of these years and then it is resold to people at a discounted price to help them create a home.  I have always felt that people in real need should not have to buy these things but be given them instead.

Well now I have found that organization and will be using them from now on and hope that you will as well your donation is still a tax write off.

Their Mission

Community Warehouse recycles donated furniture and household items.  They collect these items and give them back out to local families in need.  Community Warehouse works in partnership with over 80 local non-profit and social services agencies - see our Partner Agency list. These agencies screen and refer individuals and families in need of basic household items to the Community Warehouse. Clients include women escaping domestic violence, individuals and families who have been homeless, elderly persons on limited incomes, people with mental and physical disabilities, refugee families from all over the world, youth and adults recovering from substance abuse, and the working poor.

Your donations of furniture and household items go directly to your neighbors in need and provides them with the basics to establish a functioning home.

The Estate Store at Community Warehouse
Donations of antiques, collectibles or retro items are greatly appreciated and are sold at the Estate Store. This fundraising effort pays for the cost of serving 25 families a week. Our store is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10-4.

its a big purple Warehouse on the corner of Albina and Interstate

Please note, we are happy to pick up your donation of large items.  We ask for $20 at the time of the pick up to help cover the cost of the truck.

Please note the following information:

  • Please only donate items in ready to use condition.
  • We help individuals and families moving into small apartments - no really large items please.
  • Please have the items you wish to donate in your garage, on the driveway or very close to your doorway so that our drivers can load quickly.
  • Families need twin, double and queen beds and rarely have the room to accommodate a king bed.
  • Sofas and armchairs are our most frequently donated items. For this reason, it is the only item that we screen carefully. We ask that the material is clean with no rips or tears.
  • Please no console TVs (a TV in a furniture case).
  • We do not directly pick up large appliances. If your washer, dryer or refrigerator is 12 years old or less, we can often match your donation directly with families who have requested appliances through other social service agencies.
