Wallpaper Removal Really Does Make a Difference

By
Home Stager with Judy Heinrich Home Staging

You've no doubt heard it before, but it always bears repeating... Remove wallpaper prior to putting your house on the market.  I recently did a Walk & Talk Consultation for some sellers who had their house on the market for a very long time, 175 days. Overall, their house was in pretty good shape.  They had decluttered and maintained it well.  I suggested a few additional decor items, repositioned some furniture, etc.  Unfortunately, their previous agent told them it was okay to leave up the wallpaper that was in the diining room and entry (sorry no before photo of that space).  Why would an agent say that in this market?  During my consultation, I insisted it would be worth their effort to have the paper removed.  After their listing expired, they re-listed with one of my favorite agents, Robin Hurst of The Hurst Team at Keller Williams.   The result is fantastic and the house went under contract after only 6 days on the market.  Proof that condition and proper pricing usually brings a sale!

So true.  Even though wallpaper is now making a comeback, it still looks dated and doesn't appeal to everyone.  This room shows 100% better despite no changes to the light fixture or window treatment.

I did not even notice the crown molding and gorgeous wood floor in the before photo.  What an incredible transformation!  Great post!!

Hi Judy,  So glad the sellers listened to you and removed the wallpaper!  The dining room looks great!  I just met a Keller Williams Seattle area agent last week named Pam Hurst.  I wonder if there is any relation to the realtors you are working with on this listing.  Wouldn't that be an interesting conincidence?

Thanks for your timely post! Just today I visited a new vacant staging where the owners had done a wonderful job updating all aspects of the home...until the main bathroom which still had tiny floral grandma-ish wallpaper. I'm so pleased that they were receptive to changing it. Thanks for the before and after pictures to support that concept!

Judy, this was like night and day!  I feel keeping wallpaper around, is like asking, can I borrow your bathing suit!  Too personal to have!  Get rid of wallpaper!  Let's start a movement to ban it!  wink*

oh, and the difference it made in the furniture was pretty amazing as well.... hardly seems like it could be the same set, and yet....

Sandi - I've seen some nice wallpaper coming back, but it sure doesn't look like this stuff!

Cathy - You're eyes must have been spinning from all that pattern!

Diana - I'll have to ask Robin if she has a relative in Seattle.

Susan - Really nothing else was done in that room and look at what a difference it made!

Leslie - So glad to hear they will take out the paper.  I don't think there's too many buyers out there with Grandma wallpaper on their wish list!

Marci - Now that's an analogy I haven't heard :) Sign me up on the ban!

Melissa - Thanks! Getting rid of that distraction cures all sorts of ills :)

Great before and after photos. I have a listing that has wallpaper in the LR and DR, but the owners will not remove it.  They did however, have the wallpaper removed in the kitchen....and WOW did it make a difference.

Rebecca - Interesting that they removed it in the kitchen and could see a dramatic difference but not do the rest.

Kevin & Monica - "modernize and clean up a space" exactly!

Karen - Feel free to share anytime... the more paper removed the better!
