1. Replace your old incandescent light bulbs with CFL Light Bulbs.
2. Clean or replace filters monthly to help your furnace work at peak efficiency.
3. Turn down that thermostat to 65-68 degrees durring the day and 58-60 durring the night.
4. Install exterior wall switch and outlet gaskets to prevent air loss. Very inexpensive and can be done in minuets.
5. Calk small holes and cracks around plumbing pipes, exhaust fans, dryer vents, sink and tub drains.
6. Close fireplace and wood stove dampers when not in use.
7. Wash and rinse laundry with cold water, run full loads, and check with your electric company some times and days can save you even more. Example: ours is after 10pm and on Sunday.
8. Clean your lint filter after every use and have your dryer duct cleaned at least once a year.
9. Use the water saving option when washing and energy saving option when drying on your dishwasher.
10. Check to make sure refrierator/freezer gaskets seal tightly.
11. When possible use a countertop convection or smaller electric appliance instead of full size stove.
12. Use pots and pans with flat bottoms.
13. Turn off lights when not needed.
14. Buy a smart power strip and plug that entertainment center in. When you turn off the main item it shuts off everything else that uses ghost energy. Example: Turn off the tv and the DVD player or game system will shut down as well.
15. Unplug battery chargers when not in use. They still suck energy even when they are not charging.
16. Make energy-saving home improvments when you can. We just insulated our floor and it payed for itself in one winter. (Start this project in spring and buy and install slowly if that is all you can afford, this is an easy but dirty project.
