Every year, for the past 3 years, my family and I have had a ton of fun around Halloween. As many people know, fall, and particularly Halloween, is especially fun here in New England. With Salem Massachusetts only 1 hour away, and a great area to grow pumpkins, I figured, why not run with it.
My son, who will be 6 next week, always seems to enjoy the all of the traditions we as a family have created associated with the holiday. We tend to not really go overboard, but we do however have some traditions that most families do not.
Our family tradition, which my son loves, I believe is one that will hopefully continue for years and years. This tradition started 4 years ago at my house, and has now evolved into a larger thing. We invite all of our friends and family, and now have started to invite others, to a pumpkin carving party. We rent a large facility in Somersworth New Hampshire and ask only 2 things of our patrons. They need to bring a pumpkin to carve, and need to bring fun and enjoyment to the party.
This party has evolved from entertaining around 25 people in 2004 all the way up to over 50 people in 2006. In 2007 I expect to have nearly 75 people! Not only do we have tables set up for everyone to carve their pumpkins, but we also have a small buffet set up for everyone to eat. We accommodate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kids, roasted pork and fresh apples, cookies, jello, chips, chili, and drinks for everyone. The children especially love this party because they get a chance to see the parents enjoying the evening and have interaction with all carving, visiting, and playing. Every child who enters, receives a grab bag of goodies and a prize at the end for carving a pumpkin with their parents, the children love it!
At the end of the evening, we gather everyone and put all of the finished pumpkins on the pavilion and shut off all of the lights. We place candles in the pumpkins and just give everyone an opportunity to view the pumpkins and enjoy the completed work. This gives an opportunity for people to take pictures of the pumpkins and their children with the pumpkins, something for the whole family to remember for years and years!
