Are we a Republic or a Democracy?

What's the difference?  As I understand it, a democracy is the majority rules.  Forget right or wrong, if the majority wants it, it law.  In a republic, the rights of an individual trumps the rights of the many.

For example, if one person is treated unfairly, handycaped in wheelchair can't climb stairs in a public building, then the city must make accomadations for that one person even at the expense of the many.

In a democracy, the many say "no, don't put an elevator in this building, it's too costly"  the majority rule.

If we do in fact live in a republic, why do I hear people always saying we live in a democracy?

Interesting point Kenneth...I am not an expert so can't add to your perspective but our political system seems to have a bit of both, doesn't it?
