I never realized this test was availiable until a few years ago when someone showed it to me. Some of you inspector types and home builders out there probably know about it.
What is it?
It is a smoke machine that pumps a type of smoke into the sewer and drain system of a building. The tester plugs all the above ground outlets like vent stacks on the roof and then slowly pumps smoke into the pipes from the sewer clean out on the outside of the home .
Supposedly if there is a crack where sewer gas is seeping out of a pipe....the smoke will exit there and reveal the problem to the tester.
Keep this in mind if you ever have a home where you can't locate where the sewer gas odor is coming from.
