Life's Lessons

I think it's safe to say that we've all learned many hard and valuable lessons throughout our lives.  Have you ever truly reflected on them?  Was there 1 key moment, event or person that truly made a difference in your life and helped shape who you are?

Today I'm celebrating the BIG 40, I wanted to share with you some of the top lessons I've learned over the past 40 years.   We all live in different parts of the country, have different childhoods and experiences and then of course there are many of us that seem to live parallel lives.  To me sharing = thinking.  And thinking about your life and lessons learned can truly build a connection with someone when you realize just how similar your experiences truly are.

Would love for you to share with me (ok, everyone on AR) a valuable Life Lesson you have learned over the years - work or personal - what's your story - I'm listening....

If you'll indulge me for just a few minutes, here are my lessons:

Learning to walk

Ages 1-10

  • The day I learned to walk was the start of a new found freedom that I continue to embrace.
  • I learned to read and then write and to this day I love them both and have found a way to use them in my every day life and make a living from it.
  • I learned that "wait a minute" and "we'll be there in 10 minutes" was my parent's way of teaching patience.
  • •Beauty comes from within and to not judge a book by its cover - I could miss out on a really great story.
  • Be honest with yourself and others (12 years of Catholic school will do that to you)
  • Commit to something and see it through to the end.
  • I'm just like everybody else - no better, no worse - because we all put our pants on the same way - one leg at a time.
  • Being the oldest of 4 kids and setting an example for them builds great character.
  • I strongly dislike math and don't see the point of learning geometry.

I had a great childhood and yes I realized it as it was happening.

mom's kitchen table

Ages 10-20

  • Some of the best wisdom and advice I ever received was at my mom's kitchen table.
  • My dad taught me to work hard, have pride in my work and never burn a bridge - I might need to cross it later on.
  • I learned early on in life that doing the right thing has great rewards.

  • As a teenager I faced the deaths of 4 very important people in my life and it taught me to cherish the moments I have with people and to live life to the fullest - you just never know when you're time is up.
  • Work hard, play even harder
  • That Barbie dolls are not how "real" women look.
  • That I had friends for a reason, a season and a lifetime
  • That going away to college would show me just how strong of a person I really was.

  • That my relationship with my parents would change from child/parent to child/parent/friend
  • That everything my parents taught me and expected of me would shape me and contribute to the kind of parent I was going to be.

pain

Ages 20-30

When you're child is in pain, you feel it twice as much

  • •I now understand the point of math - maybe not geometry still but math, yes.
  • •Stepping outside your comfort zone will give you an amazing perspective & show you many things are possible.
  • •Bad things happen to good people
  • •At age 29, I had my daughter who has taught me lessons of love, life and seeing the world and people in a very simple and pure way.

  • •I FINALLY get that whole patience lesson my parents were trying to teach me.

  • •Appreciate all you've been given and find a way to give as much to someone else.

Approach each day like a student - be open to learning from everything and everyone.

Mistakes are an opportunity to learn

I learned at age 27 that material possessions are just that - materials- and they are not the definition of me, my life and my worth.

affection for life and loved ones

Ages 30-40

  • Finding that one true person that compliments your life and teaches you things you could not possible learn without them, that to me is one of the greatest gifts I've ever received and it all comes from my husband, Tom.

  • Study your past, but live in the present & be open to all the lessons you can learn.
  • I'm a spiritual being having a human experience and every decision I make and every relationship and feeling I have has a spiritual dimension to it.
  • Going through divorce taught me many lessons but one of the most important was forgiveness.
  • Success does not happen overnight - invest in yourself and your talents.
  • Being a mom is the greatest and most rewarding jobs I will ever have.
  • Now more than ever, I need to take care of my health - eat right, exercise and know that I can't eat whatever I want without consequences.

  • I've learned from all of you - that everyone has a voice and something to share and that real estate is not just a business or a transaction but something very personal.
  • Have a balance - nurture your soul, make time to pursue things that make you happy and allow that to feed all your passions for business and life.
  • Practice gratitude every day

Finally, and one of the most important lessons I've learned:

"If I had the chance to do my life over again - I'd do it the exact same way."

Anne Marie, I guess what it all boils down to is if you could change one thing what would it be? Would that one thing erase all the other good? I wouldn't take the chance of losing all the adventures I have enjoyed for one second...

Anne Marie, I loved it.  Happy Birthday lovely lady and great friend.  You know we are sister from another mother...lol.  The world is really much smaller, distance not that big of a deal when you become connected with those near and far.

Thank you for sharing your life's lessons thus far.

Tim - LOL - yes, we all have lessons we have learned and you don't need to be a mom to be similiar to me - thank you for stopping by to comment.

Paul - I am so with you Paul - that's truly what I realized - I would have changed the course and possible outcome and I like all the lessons learned, people met along the way-  they have shaped who I am today - thanks for that great comment - you captured my feelings exactly!

Kathryn  - thank you and I hope so too - so far so good!  Exactly - I do not have regrets and reflected a lot this weekend about how truly happy I am and love where I'm going in all aspects of my life.

Rebecca - Thank you my great friend - SO TRUE - we truly are sisters in so many great ways - each day discovering that next thing that just makes me shake my head and smile - awesome!  Yes, despite distance - we truly can be connected with people - you don't need to be next to someone to feel a connection - I have lived that now for 20 years of my life since moving away from Boston and ActiveRain has shown me that you don't need to see someone to make a connection - we're proof of that!  Thank you to you too for sharing all your knowledge and expertise with me.  You are a true gift.

Susie - That's what everyone keeps telling me and I'm starting to believe it!

Lourdes - Thank you so much - it was my best birthday yet!

Naoma - thank you and I agree - being a mom is the greatest job by far.

Bill - thank you - it just felt right to share since I think so many of us have similiar stories and lessons.  My birthday was fantastic and I wish I had received your advice before I celebrated - LOL.

Amber - How nice - something new I learned about you!

Trudy - thank you for the wishes and compliment - I know I have lots of stories and feelings to share - my family keeps telling me they are waiting for my book to come out.

Dorie - Thank you for your very kind words.

Castellum - Thank you my friends - I hope they come true as well!
