CONGRATULATIONS to the Middletown High School Wrestling Team. In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year after having graduated 12 of its 14 varsity wrestlers, the team really stepped up and achieved beyond expectations.
The graduating wrestlers left big shoes to fill, having won Conference for the past 3 years, and were State Class L Wrestling Champions for the last 2 years. Coach Mark Fong, and assistant coach Brandon Souto (my youngest son) knew that this year’s team had great potential, but were expecting a down year while they gained experience.
Middletown has a tough wrestling schedule in which they wrestled most of the top wrestling teams in the state. So the 17-10 record for the regular season was beyond expectations. But the surprises did not end there, the team improved with each match, and at the end of the regular season won the Conference Tournament.
The surprise continued when as a team they finished 8th out of 28 teams at the State Class L Wrestling Tournament, with three wrestlers Victor Epkenyong (112 lb), Devin Carrillo (152) and Wesley Ruimerman qualifying for the State Open Tournament. At the State Open Tournament two of the wrestlers Victor Epkenyong (112 lb) and Devin Carrillo (152 lb) placed 3rd in their weight class and qualified for the New England Tournament, with the team taking an amazing 10th place out of 85 teams.
Needless to say the expectations are high for next year, only three varsity wrestlers graduated this year, and Victor Epkenyong (Junior), Devin Carrillo (Freshman) will both be back to lead the team. And I can’t wait to be back in the gym screaming my lungs out ….. LOL
