I Dare You To Be In The Minority!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marketing 4 Realtors

Remember in school when we used to strive to be at the top of the class?  Well, some of us did.  Some of us just wanted to graduate and get it over with, right?  Some of us wanted to be in the National Honor Society, the Top 1% of the class.  Some of us wanted to be voted Most Likely to Succeed.  Or maybe it was Prom Queen and King.

Then came careers.  Who here never had a thought to be "The first person to..." (you fill in the blank).  I wanted to be a chemical researcher and win the Nobel Peace Prize for finding the cure for the common cold.  Someone else out there wanted to be the first person to figure out how to make a car run on water instead of gas.  Hillary Clinton wanted to be the first woman elected to the Democratic Convention.  Barack Obama wanted to be the first African-American president of the United States.

Being in the Top has it's perks, doesn't it?  You do realize though that being in the Top means being in the minority?  Are you willing to lead instead of follow?  Are you willing to break ranks and chart your own course instead of going with everyone else's flow?

Today I read a post by Clint Miller of Real Estate Client Referrals wherein he discussed all sorts of very interesting statistics based on a survey conducted by the California Association of Realtors.  This was a technology survey and some of the results were shocking (at least they were to me).

Did you know that ONLY 7% of agents that responded to the survey say that they participate in an online group/forum or post blogs!  Only 7%.  Are you one of the 7%?  Are you in the minority of real estate agents who actually utilize technology to further their business?  Are you in the minority of real estate agents who shows 'em what you've got by blogging regularly about your market and your community and your niche?

If you're not, if you are in the 93% of agents who don't participate in social media marketing or blogging, I DARE you to get out of the majority.  I double dog dare you!

Yeah, I am in the top 7%. I'll have to call Mom right now, she will be so proud :0). Funny. Now if I can get into the Top 7% in production, now that would be awesome.

What you left unsaid, Renae, is that those who don't have time for all the social networks could use a Virtual Assistant to leverage their time. (notice that I didn't suggest they have a VA write their blogs, just leverage them).

Not surprising as 6% of all Realtors do 94% of the business.

You ARE doing something right, Claudette! I actually wrote this post to send to my clients and business associates who are NOT doing something right!

Your mother too, Doug?  I know mine is thrilled, though she isn't quite sure why I want an "online diary" as she calls it!

Very well said, Sharon!  Thanks for adding that. So many agents don't realize that social media marketing is one of the many perfect tasks that can be outsourced to a VA.  Thanks for bringing that up!

I've heard that one too, Bill.  I guess you all here are part of that 6% of all Realtors, huh?

I love Active Rain too, Connie but I think Twitter is my absolute favorite.

Yeah Chrstine! Doesn't it make you feel all tingly inside?

While I understand your point, we have to be careful here since only 7% "of agents who responded" are not using the latest technology. That sample might not be representative at all. In fact, perhaps the agents who did not respond were too busy blogging and Playing in the Rain.

Wouldn't it be nice if that were the true case, Russel?  Unfortunately, we both know that although this particular survey had only 7% of respondents taking advantage of a great marketing platform, in "real life," where all the realtors live, we know that the number is still awfully low.  How many agents have profiles not even complete right here on AR?  Too many!

(Thanks for stopping by on your birthday!)

Trish...that is an amazing statistic that only 7% of the Realtors in are involved in any kind on on-line networking.  They must be a bit slower out there on the West Coast (kidding;-)

I liked this sentence specifically: "Are you willing to break ranks and chart your own course instead of going with everyone else's flow?" It reminds me of what Warren Buffet said last year when his book was released: "If everyone is doing something, do something else."

That's funny, Debra.  I'm sure they say the same thing about East Coast folks for various reasons! hahahahha

Exactly Jim! It's so easy to just go with the flow, isn't it? Instead, do something different!

Hey, Renae....that's OK with me....being in the Midwest!  (wink)    But seriously, it is amazing that only 7% of Realtors engage in any type of social networking at all.  You can meet so many nice people and learn SO much.

Our company has a positive approach to blogging and social networking. We also find that many of our new clients come from the web, so it is paying off. We only spend 5 hours each week doing this, so it is time well spent.
