Addison Elections: Abundance of Candidates

As one of my neighbors is fond of saying "Silly season is upon us."

Addison residents will choose a Mayor and four town council members on May 9, 2009 (early voting runs from April 27 til May 5).

Three candidates are vying for Mayor: incumbent Joe Chow, seeking a 3rd term; former council member Todd Meier, who stepped down from his council seat to run for Mayor; and newcomer Tamara Whitman, who appeared before the Council in November, 2008 to voice concerns about voting in the bond election.

Two candidates are running to fill an un-expired term for one year.  Kimberly Lay was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by Dennis Kraft's untimely death and she is one of the two candidates running.  Her opponent, Fan Benno-Caris, has received some local and national news media coverage because of her age (91), although she has "no previous political experience" according to Pegasus News.

Four candidates are vying for three council seats with 2-year terms.  Don Daseke, appointed to fill the vacancy left when Todd Meier resigned to run for Mayor; Bianca Noble; Ted Bernstein; and Blake Clemens.

(Note: campaign materials not received as of 3/13/09 from the candidates not pictured.)

The candidates will speak at the Addison Business Association meeting on April 1, 11:30 am at the Bent Tree Country Club. A council candidates forum is scheduled for April 16th at the Addison Conference Centre and a mayoral candidates forum is scheduled there on April 22nd.

Mayor Chow has set aside the first Tuesday of each month for coffee with the Mayor, 9:00 am at Town Hall.   Todd Meier has set aside Mondays between 6-7 pm at Astoria Caffe, 15701 Quorum Drive; Tuesdays between 8-9 am at Dunn Bros Coffee, Belt Line east of Marsh; and Saturdays between 9 - 10 am at the Starbucks on Midway and Belt Line Roads.

Edited 3/14: Do not misunderstand me.  I am not saying the candidates are silly.  Elections bring out behavior in people (like stealing signs, defacing signs, etc.) that is ridiculous.

Hi Lorrie... it sure looks like the people in Addison take their coffee with some cream and politics mixed in! :)

Steve:  There have been some really close elections here over the past couple years.  This one is shaping up to be no different.

I disagree with your neighbor.  Elections are always important, maybe your neighbor should try living in a place where electios are truly silly...like Russia.

Hi Nelly,

I think you have misinterpreted what my neighbor means.  Of course elections are important.  But they often lead people to do silly things.  I come from a political but non-partisan family.  My mother served on the Board of Education and as a 2-term Mayor in my hometown.  I grew up surrounded by local politics.  They can, indeed, be silly as well as dead serious.
