Let them eat cake!

I have to give a big shout out to a great connection I have made in my community.  I have the privilege of working with an amazing event coordinator that also happens to do a great job decorating cakes. Her name is Rebecca Reszka and her company is Social Solutions.

I usually take two cakes whenever I go to a presentation at a realtor's office.  This was a marketing techniques that I learned of at the ASP course I took in July 2007. I tell the realtor that I will bring whatever flavor cake they choose.  I take that request and then I call Rebecca and she works her magic.

Rebecca makes me two cakes, one decorated and one not.  The one that isn't decorated usually has a bag of icing that is ready to decorate with lying next to the cake.  (Everything needed to have chocolate cake without the aesthetic value.)

The decorated cake (symbolic of a house after staging has been completed) usually has gold piping along the sides and bottom and my company's name, Staged SO Right, piped in the middle.  Sometimes she adds a few sparkles, but usually there are no graphics.  This week however, she surprised me!  She took the logo off of my business card and created it in icing on the cake.

I was so thrilled with the way it turned out.  The pictures really don't do it justice because I took the photos at an odd angle and I am just not a good photographer.  It really did look wonderful and looked just like my business card.  I appreciate her attention to detail and she makes it so easy for me to refer her to other people.  I have found a great partner here in Elizabethtown and hope you all can find someone just as wonderful to support your businesses.

Kathy - I know you understand how a picture speaks a thousand words.  The cakes say so much during the presentation.  Rebecca is a sweetie and the best cook!  I am very blessed - I think everyone should have someone like her in their lives!  Thanks a bunch!

What a fantabulous (corny word?!?) idea.  I would definitely rather have the cake with icing and what a great visual metaphor.  I'm taking this idea, hope you don't mind!!

Another great idea Sheila!  I'm curious,  does anyone ever eat the undecorated cake?  I could see someone who doesn't like a lot of frosting taking the plain cake and putting a squirt of frosting on top.

Sheila,

The cake example is great! Do they actually eat the cake?

As a home inspector, I was encouragae NOT to take food to the realtors' offices, because the majority of realtors are women. We all know that women are always 10# overweight :-) And that they wouldn't appreciate me bringing in food, particularly food that is so frequently tied with weight management problems.

BTW, men never worry about their weight. Whatever cake the realtors don't eat .... mmmmm mmmm good!

That's an awesome idea, Sheila -- and I loved the business card reference! Not only did you make your unstaged/staged point in a fun way, but folks got a visual connection to your business card!

Lori - You have at it!  It was introduced to me at my staging class, so have fun with it.  I have done it with cupcakes and strawberry shortcake too!  Make one look sort of messy and the other one all pretty.  I hope you get as good of a response as I do.

Sharon:  There have been a couple of people who were thrilled that I brought an unfrosted cake.  I usually don't stay to see them eat it though.  I do the presentation and then leave them with the staged plates, napkins, forks and the cakes.  I really don't know if they even get eaten at all.

Andrew:  I don't know where you got your info from - but food seems to be the way into every realtor's office I know. Most people respond well to food brought to them.  You don't have to bring cake - you could bring in a fruit basket or something else healthy I guess.  That may endear you to their heart because you were looking out for them :)  I find that everybody enjoys a piece of cake every once in a while.

Thanks Lisa - I couldn't have done it without her!  When I brought the idea to her originally - she was really accommodating!  This was over the top - I couldn't have been more pleased.  It must have worked too - I had a team that was in that presentation meet with me on Tuesday and I think we are building a great alliance.  Yeah!!!

Sheila, I can't think of another way to make a presentation to a group of Realtors during their weekly staff meeting and get your staging point across in a short time. Rebecca is soooo talented...it looks too good to eat!

What a memorable way to demonstrate the difference in a staged home vs. a home that is not ready for the market.  The cake with a replica of your BC is a great way to market you!  Kudos to Rebecca for that bit of lagniappe!!
