I want to see flowers!

Like most of you, I have been patiently impatiently waiting for Spring to arrive.

Seeing the Buttercups and Crocus in the past few days has given me hope that this cold weather is behind us.

Since the flowers haven't all started blooming, I was thinking of the pictures I took last year of some awesome eye candy. I know you took some great pics too.

So post them here and get us in the mood for Spring!

Here is my favorite:

Lizette's Midnight Cyrus. It only blooms around midnight then the flower dies at sunrise.

The Midnight Cereus: meaning, "transient beauty."

Given to me by a friend that has passed away. This was a leaf stuck in the dirt that started doing strange things.

An aerial stem started growing...and growing and almost shot skyward 5 feet! It was like the Jack and the Beanstalk story.

In fact the plant didn't ever bloom until the 1 year anniversary of my friend's death. That was weird!

I had no idea what this plant was at the time.

After some research I found out it was a Midnight Cereus. Discovered in 1753 in South America jungles. Cuttings were brought over to Europe.

Then the strange red bud started forming until it grew to almost a foot long from the edge of the leaf. I started watching it each night with my Mom or friends to see if suddenly the white bloom would pop out. I had moved it out on the deck by the door so I wouldn't miss the moment. Midnight Cereus

When it does bloom, the fragrance is a similar to a Jasmine or Gardenia. Last year I counted 13 blooms all in one night. It was a major event!

Lizette, I think it is so cool that you have one of these. My dad had one in his greenhouse in Connecticut that covered the whole end of the green house and climbed all along the ventilator at the top. When that thing exploded in bloom you could smell it all over the place. I have a cutting from it that I have had for 40 years and it has blossomed twice. The problem with it is that when you transplant it to a bigger pot it can take many years for it to bloom again---until it starts to get root-bound. Due to climate etc---here it only blooms around August. I am hoping that this year will be the year that mine blooms again----I transplanted it to a bigger pot about 4 years ago and has been growing like crazy ever since----I suspect I may have to wait a couple of more years. It is worth it though. The other thing about it is that it only blooms at night and the bloom only lasts that one night. As everyone can see from your pictures----the blossoms are incredible. Charles - these plants are amazing. I was thinking of repotting so it won't fall over but I might tie it to my deck rail instead. I have read that there might be a red variety. I'd love to get a cutting of that!

Connie - Everyone thinks I am kidding when I want to plan an all night party on the deck the night they bloom. they are worth the wait! Keep that rain down there...I want to see some sun!

I had a feeling it would be helpful to you-----too late for me. I have basically resigned myself to the fact that the plant now owns the living room:) Maybe I could start selling cuttings? Another cool thing about them is that (short of freezing) they can't die!

Charles - I've only repotted mine once and didn't know any better then. It still wanted to bloom the next year. I have put extra dirt around on the top to start cuttings. I thought they would grow and put more foliage near the bottom of the plant to keep it grounded. This has worked so far. It has a mind of it's own! LOL

Hi Lizette,

What a beautiful plant the flowers are amazing!! It is too bad that they only last one night!! No flowers in sight here still lots of snow!! It is starting to melt so hopefully soon we will see some signs of spring.
