In Praise of Disruption

Real Estate Agent

Looking for a way to break out of a creative rut?  There's nothing like stirring up a little turbulence to get new thoughts flying.

My tool of choice?  Disruption The word is difficult, uncomfortable but "Disruption" is not destructive. It's creation. Disruption is a means of creating something dynamic to replace something that has become static.

Sometimes you have to crack the mold of standard conventional thinking..and shatter biases in order to set creativity free!   Disruption provides us with the opportunity to...

* Ask better questions

* Challenge conventional wisdom

* Overturn assumptions and prejudices

                      All these get in the way of imagining new possibilities and visionary ideas...

I guess we've all heard the "its always been done that way." But are you one of those that keeps asking......"Why?"......Why and........and Why are things the way they are?  Thats where undiscovered and hidden truths are the 'Why' where potential lies.......

A well-articulated vision inspires the people to change the way a company thinks and acts. It provides a rallying cry that can propel it into the future.

Disruption seeks to retire old, low-yielding ideas and launch new, highly profitable ones. A disruptive idea is quite simply the best and fastest way to overturn conventions and achieve a vision.

What if?

And What if?

And What if led to another What if?

Disruption is all about risk-taking, trusting your intuition, and rejecting the way things are supposed to be. Disruption goes way beyond advertising, it forces you to think about where you want your company to go and how to get there.

The strong pull to maintain the status quo, the resistance to disruption are an almost physical barrier to what is possible. Creativity, real power, communication and high productivity are not possible when everything is designed around a culture of no disruption.

Two empowering contexts... One - that any progress, any new paradigms always require disrupting the current reality.

Two - just the thought of disruption socially  is the source of most suppression. Really creating an empowering context for disruption allows people to be free to be and the organization to recreate itself on the cutting edge.  How exciting is that? :-)

So what do we do?  Stir the Shit!

Liz, I agree, that after working on something for a while, if I get up and do something else, when I come back I get NEW and FRESH ideas.  It's letting the subconscious mind work for me!

Great post - we all need to get shaken out of our rut once in a while, stir the pot and get things moving in a new direction.  As the old saying goes "a change is as good as a rest".

Awww -- disruption!  For many folks that surely is a scary thing.  It might/could/should mean some sort of change.  There's good change and bad changes so it really pays to pay attention to what the disruption/change might be.

Good post and definately all should listen and question the what ifs, if we's etc, etc.  Ruts are common dis-ruptive states of mind.

Disruption = Creativity?  Okay, I'll go with that.  I know it's all about constantly questioning WHAT you are doing and WHY you are doing it.  Thanks for stirring the pot.

I use the term creative dissonance to describe what you do. I also find that the Socratic method can test conventional theories. Reducing it to the absurd can get you somewhere you want to be.

You really made me think!

OH BABY I feel your JOY at the prospect of pushing boundaries to make the world a better place by getting status quo to consider and adopt new ideas, and waking up sleeping giants...

I also cringe a little bit.  Have lots of scars from doing same ; )

Status quo likes to squelch disruption....   As it did to Socrates for DISRUPTING the Athenian Society... or Christ for Disrupting in His day.

Does that happen to you?

I mean, don't get me wrong.  I am not a lightweight.  I LOVED disrupting the average FSBO seller - for instance...  when I was selling homes...  But if they decide to exercise protective combat, and make it personal, eliminate me to protect their world, I could just say NEXT.... and move on.

However, As you probably know, the JOY of Disruption is not shared by all!  When Disrupting BIGGER THINGS, one finds status quos that are being protected by BIGGER POWERS.  Bigger Powers fight harder, get more personal in their defense of status quo.

As one who has the WARRIOR/KING Energy (Jungian Archetype - see my AR blog if you want to know more about this) I don't shrink from the conflict when right is right.

But as I get a little older, I sometimes wonder about all the healing time needed afterward - and if it is really worth it.  Perhaps I ought to withdraw from the battle and just fall into the KING role?

Do you ever get hurt doing all the distrupting?

Karen -i guess theres a time and a place for everything? :-) thats quite the discourse...........and thanks for following me on twitter! :-) Hmmm i'm not sure I could/did say it better myself! grin......Truer words were never spoken.....and all very good questions...........I'm not sure I can decide ahead of time.........but when in the midst of stagnant water, if the choice is to get lost in the quagmire or kick up a storm.........I guess then.........there only would be one choice..........Hurt - yes..........- time between recovery - shorter........:-)

Maybe we citizens of the country to the immediate south of you should send some of our politicians over here so you can help them disrupt their lives. Might be better for the world.
