Bernard Bernanke, You're Right, It's Time to Start Spreading the Good News (and there is some) - Norma Toering REMAX Palos Verdes

In case you missed 60 Minutes last night Bernard Bernanke's interview was on point--he's neither a politician nor a Wall Street suit, he grew up on Main Street in small town America.  His view is not one of doomsday (although he admitted we came close) nor is he a Pollyanna with a Marie Antoinette attitude of let them eat cake.  He is so determined to find solutions to the financial crisis we are in the midst of, he often sleeps on the sofa in his office.  He certainly inspired me to do my part to help restore confidence in the economy of the USA.  So here goes.

If you think the housing market is dead in my little corner of the world, here is a peek at my calendar for today:

Submit offer on foreclosure--I'm hoping the third attempt will be our lucky one.  The first two houses sold with multiple offers; this time the buyers offered over asking price with attractive terms and conditions.

Take photos of new listing(write ads, load on MLS and all over the Internet--and prepare for broker open house tomorrow).

Attend inspection of recent sale (and study all those disclosures etc.).

Schedule three prospective buyers to view property this week, and I'm waiting for a seller to decide whether she wants to list her home now or wait a few weeks.

Oh yes, I'm making corned beef tacos tonight to serve at my broker open house in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

As I move through my day I'll nudge the economy forward the only way I know how--determine the needs of my clients and deliver results.

It will be a long day in real estate today, but I will not be sleeping on the yoga mat I keep at my office.  Bernand, although I admire your dedication, I prefer the comfort of my own bed.

Hopefully he is not just saying what people want to hear but is true to light about the situation.

Norma - You have a great upbeat and practical attitude!  As for Bernake, time will tell what is spin and what isn't.  Ultimately anything he says is just a sign on the landscape.  The landscape is there with or without the sign.  And we all have to survive no matter what the landscape is like.  I think if more of us focused on the basics of survival instead of all the signs, there would be a lot more thriving going on instead of people just barely getting by, or in some cases, not getting by.  Kudos to your attitude and effort!

Jason -- Adjustments have to be made when the landscape changes--but business is still there, you just have to work harder to find it.

There is some good news--I've been reading it and seeing it!  As for Bernake--he never saw the housing slump--in 2007--he was still saying that the housing sector has nothing to do with the rest of the economy (Yes, this is what he said in 2007)--don't know how much I trust him...but I know the best is yet to come!!

Amanda - I think the enormity of the problem blindsided more than a few key people.  That aside, I think as real estate professionals we can play an important role in the recovery by reporting on the activity in our local markets.

I missed the show....but are you telling me someone in Washington DC is actually saying something encouraging? maybe the stock market won't drop another 5% today.

You go girl...i'll be entering a new listing today, too, although not up to PV standards...it's a 100 year old cabin in Estes Park across from the Elkhorn Lodge. Fantastic views and a bit of a fixer-upper. We moved to Estes from Hermosa Beach and miss it quite a bit this time of the year when it is still winter here and gorgeous there. Jim and Willis of Ocean Realtors helped us get our start and without them, we wouldn't have had the home ownership opportunity that allowed us to be in the mountains. Have a warm sunny day for me!

Karen --Don't get too excited about the powers that be in Washington DC just yet, but yes, there was an edge of optimism in his words.

Brian - I much prefer to look at the bright side--the dark side is too gloomy for me.
