A friend of mine, and also a dear client, uses this as his tag line on email communication. It has been on my mind for a while and I just wanted to let him know a few things that come to mind.
If what you are doing day to day is causing pain and suffering, why bother? Ben and Jerry had a speaking tour in 1997-98 and the motto was "If it's not fun, why do it?" I could not agree more. If your goal is retirement and you actually WANT to reach it, doing something that is unpleasant, unenjoyable or not fun is probably going to prohibit you from achieveing that goal. If anyhting it'll drive you to your grave faster than you can say, "retirement".
I plan to retire someday, but it's going to take a lot to drag me out of this business. I truly enjoy what I do, well most days, and if I didn't, you better believe I'd find something else to do with my time!
So if you are truly in pain and suffering, make a change.
