Ice Out is Almost Here—Lake Ice is NOT Safe in the North Metro!

By
Real Estate Agent with Boardman Realty Minnesota License#90858

It seems like only yesterday when Forest Lake was full of cars, trucks and ice houses all attempting to catch a fish or two on a beautiful winter day. This photo was taken in February when the ice was four feet thick. Ice houses had to be removed a couple of weeks ago but with our below zero temperatures just last week, people were still venturing out on the lakes in their cars thinking the ice was safe.

Forest Lake Ice Fishing by Teri Eckholm Realtor

Since spring has almost sprung in the last few days, the 60 degree weather has made the ice very unstable. A car sunk into the slush on Rush Lake yesterday in northern Chisago County. It's probably time to stay off the ice and take a break from fishing until the ice out. Use the time to get the boat ready for the fishing opener in May.

Teri,

We have trucks and cars that drive on the lake here as well, to say ice fishing is big is an understatement.  At the same time you are right, when the weather warms it's time to stay off the lake, too many take chances and every year they are pulling a car/truck out of the water.

Teri - I saw some footage on the news last night that had me shaking my head.  They had shown two cars partially submerged in the ice/water on the lakes yesterday.  It was 66 degrees in southern MN.  Yikes!

Lynn--One of those cars was probably the one on Rush Lake that I saw. I talked to someone from the area and he was very surprised that it melted so fast as he said it was pretty thick a few weeks ago. Melts fast when the weather is in the high 60's.

I was watching a program on the Discovery Channel about ice roads in the Arctic, but I don't think I'd be willing to take my car out on the ice anywhere in America.

Ray--I am with you on this. I grew up seeing people drive on ice and have only done it on one occasion when we went ice fishing. Just like camping, it was so not for me! I know that many Minnesotan's love this but to me it still is frightening! This time of year it is also deadly.
