BNP Paribas Open It's that time of year again where tennis fans flood the Indian Wells area in California to watch all of the world's greatest tennis players compete.  A star-studded cast includes some of the finest men and women players such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Jelena Jankovic and Nadia Petrova.

The BNP Paribas Open is one of the events that are on the ATP World Tour and the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.  While tennis is the reason everyone gathers for this event, there are numerous things to take advantage of while there.  To make sure you do not miss a thing going on, here are some facets you can experience while at Indian Wells, California.

The most obvious reason to go is to watch tennis.  You will be able to watch a plethora of exciting matches between all of the top men's and women's tennis players.  You will be able to get up close and personal with some of the greatest names ever seen.  There is nothing better than witnessing a match between the top players in person.

BNP Paribas Open The next facet to take in is the overall venue.  There is no other tennis facility in the world that has such a contrast of scenery.  At Indian Wells you truly are amidst the desert and yet still surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains.  It is an amazing sight to be able to take in the desert air while still observing snow capped mountains.  Because of this, USA Today put the Indian Wells Tennis Garden first on the list of top ten tennis destinations to visit around the world.

While most of your attention is going to be on the tennis stars, you may be able to stargaze in the crowd as well.  Because this tennis venue is relatively close to Los Angeles and Hollywood, many movie actors and entertainers make appearances.  Some of the celebrity tennis fans you may run into include Gwen Stefani, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell or Queen Latifah.

It can be exciting meeting or getting an autograph from a star in the crowd, but there is nothing as exciting as autograph hunting following a match.  If you keep an eye on the practice courts you may be lucky enough to run into Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, or Novak Djokovic.

The whole reason you are at Indian Wells is to watch tennis, but you are not going to have a ticket to every match that is going on.  During your time away from the venue you can enjoy the fine food and wine it has to offer.  There are plenty of places to eat, especially on March 19th at Levy Restaurants.  They will be conducting the 2009 Food and Wine Dinner at this year's tournament.BNP Paribas Open

If you are looking for entertainment during the night, you can attend the fashion show while joining Carlos Diaz.  This is a private indoor runway fashion show by Fila and Los Angeles' own hot designer Trina Turk.  You can see players from the open alongside professional models on the runway.  Your ticket price will include cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, a gift bag, runway seating, and raffle tickets to win prizes.

At the end of the day you are going to realize that the reason you are there is to watch tennis.  Because of this, it is going to be easy to want to buy another ticket.  There is no reason why you shouldn't splurge a little bit to see your favorite tennis stars on a large venue.  While it is entertaining to watch on TV, it is a whole other world when witnessing it on the big stage.

While the first three rounds have completed, it is down to the quarterfinals.  Only the top tennis players in this year's competition are left waiting for you to watch.  By the end of the week we will all know who has taken the event's championship for men's and women's singles and doubles.

Some of the greatest players in the world are still in it looking to take home the trophy.  Some of the players you can enjoy watching include Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and many more.

The ideal way to watch is in person, but not everyone is able to afford the trip or simply cannot take the time off.  If this is the case, you can watch all of the matches on television.  There are a number of matches to still be played in men's, women's and doubles.  The great thing about high-level tennis like this is you never know who is going to come out on top.

Because of this, the only thing you can do is tune in and watch history be made.  You do not want to be the person that misses one of the greatest matches to ever be played.  With a full week of tennis left you do not want to miss out.

Update

Vera Zvonareva became the first woman to win both the singles and doubles titles in this tournament in the same year since Lindsay Davenport in 2000. Zvonareva beat defending champion Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (5), 6-2 for the singles title.

No. 1 ranked player Rafael Nadal, earning the men's singles title for the second time at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Ragael Nadal beat Andy Murray, 6-1- 6-2.

Hi Elaine,

Great job on showcasing this event. I passed by the tennis center 2X last week-end. It was just so exciting to see the stands so full and all the flags flying high. You are so right about a great venue and event. Seems like everyone was so excited for the event.

I was in the desert for a few days for the La Quinta Arts Festival, there is so much to do in your beautiful community, from Palm Springs to Indio, every single one of them. Hiking is another one of my personal favorites!

Congratulations on the feature!

JB,

Looks like mid 80's through the week, cooling to a brisk 74 for the weekend. Overall this is a great time of year for our weather. The tournament is fun, and there are lots of great spots to eat there!

Lynda,

Thanks, it is such an exciting event. We try to get over there in the evenings to enjoy the night time matches. The La Quinta Arts Festival is so great, you are right..there is a lot to do here and hiking is so beautiful in these mountains.

Hi Elaine,

And I thought the only tournaments out there were golf. Hmmm...go figure. Just kidding. This really is the perfect time of year for the weather there. But calling 74º 'brisk' is probably going to make more than a few folks jealous.

: )

Hi Elaine - Sounds like an exciting event for the tennis lovers. It was always tennis (vs. golf) that would draw me to your area. Oh, and the Aerial Tram, And the food. And the shopping... and, and and.
