Potential New Program "Cash For Clunkers"

By
Real Estate Agent with Remax Services

I just read about the "cash for clunkers" program in several different news articles.  It really grabed my attention, and I'm sure it will grab yours as well.

If this bill is passed the government would buy cars that are a minimum of 8 years old, and recycle there different parts.  For turning in your clunker you would receive a government voucher for somewhere between $3,000-$7,500. Sounds pretty good so far.

The programs goal would be to get many of the fuel-ineffient cars off the road. This would in turn help reduce polution, as well as our reliance on foreign fuel. This program was already implemented in Germany, and they say their car sales went up 21%.

Of course, there is more to this bill than I have been able to write about here, so for more information I would suggest googling "cash for clunkers" or checking out U.S.News and The Washington Post for more complete articles.

Once I went through the pros and the con's of the program, I'm not so keen on it.

Please post your opinions.

Sounds like a great idea.  This would definitely help car sales.

The newer the vehicle the more upside down people will be in their loans so the $4500 won't pay off their loan. Then they can't buy another vehicle.

Hmm  So the trade in needs to be 8 years old or older,  2001 or older. $5,000 if buy a North American made car     $4,000 for foreign-made vehicles. Sticker less than #35,000.

Thats what they are talking about.

We will see if anything comes from this.

I don't think it makes sense. You can't buy a fuel efficient car for what the cash payout on your old one would be.

Thanks for your comments

It's a tough call as to wether it makes sense or not.

I do think it would make sense if they just fine tune the program.

Right now you could only buy a NEW, NORTH AMERICAN made car through the program.

Some people are claiming this cuts out a lot of fuel efficient cars made in other country's such as the prius and toyota highlander hybrids.

Anything that helps get the black smoke spewing car that is in front of me every morning off the road I am for it.  Good post.  It seems like a great idea, but have not looked into it like you have.
