With few exceptions, homes in the US use drywall for their interior walls. After reading about this drywall problem a second time, I decided it was time to alert my fellow members on Active Rain, to potential problems with drywall manufactured in China. The problems being reported by homeowners, primarily in Florida (a few in Alabama and Louisiana) include:

  • Sulfur based gases which smell like rotten eggs.
  • Piping and wiring corroded after just a few years, causing electronics and appliances to fail.

These problems are alledged to come from high levels of sulfur. They believe the problem stems from increased drywall imports in 2004 and 2005, during the housing boom. To learn more, read the full article on cnn.com.

Yep, just wrote about this a few weeks ago. It appears the problem is mostly allocated to the southeast but it is slowly showing itself in other regions across the US. Good post!

The worst part of this whole thing however, are the scam artist that have latched onto this. I have recieved numerous calls from people offering to sell me test kits, sniffers and wonder cure all ointments that I can then use in my inspections.
