Recently my wife and I along with a group of Exit Realtors had the pleasure of working on a Habitat for Humanity build in Newark, New Jersey.  It was the second day of the build so when I tell you it was "raw" it really was.  The foundation was laid, the back wall and two side walls of the house were up. We entered the house by climbing a ladder that had been propped up against the foundation.  During our time there we were able to construct the front wall and some interior walls before it began raining.  We were supervised by two very knowledgeable men from Habitat for Humanity.  I could not believe that I was able to raise a wall and begin to build a house.  The heaviest thing I lift in real estate is a pen.  Usually a hammer in my hand means something is going to be broken.  However with the instructions from the site supervisors I was able to help build a few walls.

I will tell eveyone that it was a WONDERFUL feeling knowing that we were helping someone attain their dream.  Now we do help people attain their dream when we help them sell or buy a home, but it does not compare to the feeling you get when you are part of building the house.

Everyone from Habitat for Humanity was very nice to work with, we were given a terrific lunch but most of all an awesome experience.

I urge everyone if you have not volunteered your time to work on a Habitat Build, then find your local office and give a few hours of your time.  Your cup will be filled to the brim and even overflow.

Thanks for reading and I hope you will be able to share the same experience in the future.

My brother-in-law and his wife applied to get a Habitat for Humanity home of their very own.  I love this program because you have to put in so many hours building homes for others before you can get one for yourself.  You can also involve your family to put hours in your "bank" to go towards your home.  This is definitely a worth cause!

Bill, My brokerage was lucky enough to decorate a Habitat for Humanity home (as our community service project) for Christmas for a family who was due to move in 2 weeks before the holiday. Not only did it boost morale among co-realtors but totally surprised the family as well! The dedication took place as we finished all decorations, including hand made stockings for the entire family and twinkling lights on the house and blow-up characters on the lawn. And yes, it does make a heart feel good to know you've touched someone else's.

Thank you for the wonderful post!

Heather, we did learn the history of how Habitat got its start and were told that the family the house is being built for is required to help with the build.  I think this is a great idea, because then they have "sweat equity" in the home and will be able to maintain it in the future.  I hope your brother-in-law was able to qualify for the home.

Wanda, what a wonderful idea that was to decorate the home for the holidays.  It brought a tear to my eye to think of how the family felt when the home was dedicated to them and they could enjoy their new home all dressed up.  Thanks for stopping by.

Debra, thank you for the kudos, we had a great time, if you ever have the opportunity to do it try to take advantage of it, when you do it a little piece of you changes.
