Want to go back in time? Well, it’s not that hard if your trip planning involves a little town by the name of Mendocino. Once a logging town, it still feels like the 19th century is alive and well here. Set past a thick redwood forest, the Pacific Ocean raises its fury against the rock outcropping that protect this hamlet as Victorian houses take cover under their decorative eaves. Mendocino is definitely a walking town with its beautiful scenery and homes.

If you are a history buff, be sure to stop by the Ford House Museum and read about the fascinating past and the filmography of the town. You can buy local wares, including hand-knitted items. A mid-19th century Buddhist Temples invites both the faithful and the curious into its painted walls. If you like roughing it, head to Mendocino Headlands State Park and take a hike around the town and its stunning vistas.

Or, head to Skunk Trail and take in the massively towering redwoods whose ages often make the town seem new. You can get close to the machinery that made this town, the saw mills. Then breathe in and enjoy the Mendocino sea air as it ebbs and flows in front of you. Or, better yet, rent an affordable vacation home, and relax on your front porch, watching the sea gulls and other marine wildlife.
