Poll: 54% of Americans satisfied with how Obama handled AIG bonus controversy

Here's a real interesting read: go to this article titled "AIG, Congress, Geithner Target of Bonus Backlash" . More info and polls in the article. Here's a peek.

PRINCETON, NJ -- For the most part, the central players in the AIG bonus controversy have come out looking badly -- with one notable exception. A majority of Americans are dissatisfied with the way AIG management, Congress, and Treasury Secretary Geithner have handled the matter. Only President Obama gets a more positive than negative evaluation.

This is based on a new USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted March 21-22, after a week when the AIG bonuses dominated the news headlines.

Personally, I am stunned that Obama's approval rating is still where it is... When will this honeymoon end?  Are we really that stupid as Americans to see that we are headed in the wrong direction?

That is some scary statistics.  This is going to set a precedent that will scare other companies to death.  It used to be a deal is a deal......but no more.  President Bush knew about the bonuses, Obama knew about the bonuses, Congress knew about the bonuses and they all did nothing.  This is exactly why government needs to stay out of the free enterprise system.  Let AIG file bankruptcy....it is not the end of the world or AIG...it is just bankruptcy and let the courts determine how all the cards are layed out.....not Congress who has no clue how to run a business.

Dean --- It's only been two months.....

Tim --- when business is doing well, they want the government to stay out. But when they're in trouble, they want the government to help. Sort of like children, right? The kids want the parents to stay out of their lives, thinking the parents don't know anything. But when they get in trouble, they expect the parents to bail them out.

Pacita - Pres. Obama has managed to stay in the background on this. Of course, it is after this poll that he basically stated that he didn't want any punitive taxes against AIG. Will the people follow his lead and quit demanding the heads of the AIG recipients?

I find in a sign of America's obsession with celebrity to see that Obama's approval rating is still so high.  They don't want to see their hero fall... so they ignore the correlation between the way the country is being managed, and the debris falling all around it.

Mike --- has Obama really stayed in the background? He may not have been aware of the existence, much less the size of the bonuses, but didn't he express his outrage just like the rest of us did? Or was that his method to sound like "one of us"?

Julie --- guess Obama is getting a pass for now. Let's see what the next big challenge is, and how he manages it.

Pacita, its good to hear that the people still have confidence.  While his plans may or may not work, what we really need right now is reassurance things are being dealt with in a thoughtful manner.  I can only imagine what it would be like if we didn't have some hope to cling to.

I guess we are still only 2 months into his term. Only time will tell.

Pacita, it is not to hard to believe that the percentage is so high. Most people don't get into the fine points of why things happen. They just get the quick local news highlight showing Obama offended at the bonus money. They don't hear that the admin. put the language back in the AIG bailout that the bonus money must stay, or that the admin. has a little time line problem regarding when they found out about the money and all the other points that could have Micheal Moore making his next documentary (if it was a republican admin of course) hehe.

Eventually, people will get the info but by then they will probably ignore it. LOL. Also, didn't about 54% of the population drink the kool aid   vote for Obama?

On this issue, he gained 1 percent of approval. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

All we can hope and pray for is that the country is on its way to recovery, and soon!

I really don't understand the positive rating for Pres. Obama concerning this AIG scandal.  I guess people just can't believe he would do something like that - even though he was a senator when this whole thing was hatched.  Like Kevin said, "time will tell".

Guess every President deserves the benefit of the doubt....he's only been the president for two months. He's learning a few things, like depending less on teleprompters and having a big TV monitor instead. Or being a little more careful with his words and refrain from gaffes (always goes with the territory).

Let's just hope he does well, for the benefit of our country and the world.
